Put my cargo door back on yesterday and found that the lower backing plate for one of the door hinges is missing. i assume that it fell down the chanel whilst removing it or it was never there on my bus when I got it. So how do I fix this? Do I cut the vertical chanel/stinger instide the bus and fish the thing out or what?
Damn I was so close to taking it to the paint shop Monday! _________________ Thanks, Glenn

Yes. Specially since you haven't taken it to the paint shop yet! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

you might try using a magnet or wire to fish it up since it is the bottom plate. i think most people end up cutting the pillar to get at it. you are lucky you caught it before paint _________________ WANTED:

It's the rear door so the wheel well is not an option. I'll try fishing it out. and if that doesn't work, I'll bust out the die grinder. What's the best way to prevent this from happening again? _________________ Thanks, Glenn

What I did was use some thin wire to make a plate-keeper fished between the door hinge and the screw plate to keep it from dropping down when removing the door(s). Then, as soon as the door was removed, I put one screw into the plate hand tight to keep it safe while working on the bus. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

I haven't made a hole yet. I won't get to it until Sunday at the earliest. Would you like me to post pics if I have to make the cut?

Which cargo door? Front or rear one?
If it's the rear one you can cut some slices in the rear of the C pillar, fold it back, retrieve the nut plate, move it back in place, reweld the clip/bracket that holds it in place, fold the metal back and reweld it.
If it's the B pillar you have more of a job. I attack those fom the outside of the pillar, slice and peel behind the dogleg seam, follow proceedure as above.
It's a pretty complex formed plate that holds the nut plate and has to be attacked for repairs from the backside of it.
I just went through this on a bus 2 weeks ago. _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

Pics would be nice, just to give others in the same dilema an idea of on how to go about fixing it and to keep them from freaking out like I did. Good luck. |

It's the rear spitpile I got lucky in that department (if you can call it that). It sure did feel like the front was about to let go when I was reinstalling that door. I'll have to make a note of that so I pay close attention if and when I ever pull the doors off again.
I'll try and get some pics up if I can't fish it out. If I manage to fish it, I'll post the technique I used. _________________ Thanks, Glenn

Here's the fix I made.
The first thing I did was try to fish it out using one of my favorite tools. I telescoping magnet. When I shoved it down the screw hole, my tool snapped. I was pissed to say the least. Now I had to make a cut to retrieve my tool and fix the problem.
From the interior, I made a three inch cut on the rear of the vertical stringer for fishing and to get at the backing plate. I only cut three sides and then pried it open like a hinge. My tool was in plain view when I opened it up.
When I pulled my crippled little magnet out, the backing plate came out with it.
Here you see the tab that is designed to keep the backing plate from falling. What happens is, as you unscrew the bolts holding the hinge in place, the plate puts pressure on the tab and pushes it away from it's designed position. After the screws come out, the nutplate falls. I think it's a good thing that my magnet broke because there is no way I could've fished the nut plate back to it's proper position. Even If I managed to to so, it most likely would've fallen the next time I pulled the door off. So I repositioned the backing plate and used a screwdriver to bend the tab back into it's proper position.
After I cleaned up the inside a little, I bent my little hinge back in place and promptly ran some of the worst welds of my short career to finish up.
