Hi Sambas,

I’m troubleshooting my gas gauge. I had the cluster out and shorted the gas gauge and it read full. Great. So now I’m looking at investigating the sender in the tank

Fortunately, I have an inspection hatch so I can access the tank without removing EVERYTHING. However, as well as bolts, the inspection hatch is sealed with some sort of sealant to keep any engine fumes and smells out of the cabin.

Once I’m finished inside the tank, what sort of sealant is recommended to reseal the inspection hatch? It’s not structural. It’s just to keep the fumes and noise out of the cabin. Obviously, it will need to be able to take some heat.

What is recommended?

Much thanks

I have just used a high temperature rated RTV silicone, though a fire stop sealant would add a degree of safety should you have an engine fire.

One thought: isn’t a heat resistant sealant a bit overkill here? In order to affect that seal in the event of an engine fire, the fire would have to be in the tank compartment, bigger problems.

If it gains you ten seconds before the heat or smoke makes it to the passenger compartment it might save your life.
