So I was driving my '72 through the woods (yeah, I know...) and my speedometer quit on me. A lot of under brush wrapped around the cord, which has receeded a good inch-and-a-half away from the wheel cap. I tried using tweezers to pull it back out from within the wheel but it is jammed. the cord still turns and can be moved independently of the rubber sheath about a inch in and out. I don't know what has reduced the slack within the sheath, or how to fix it. Do I need to buy a new cable? If so, how do I attach it to the drum?

I'd trace the cable back to the dash to see if it got twisted out of its normal routing and is why it doesn't reach the wheel any more. Maybe you can still untangle it so it's back to its original routing. At the front wheel it's held to the center cap with a little e-clip. You've probably lost it but you can get another at any hardware store.
