|
|
The syncro has a Yakima roof rack on it. It was installed by a PO so low that:
1. The bolts scratch the paint on the roof under the pop top.
2. The cross bars actually set on the pop top in the center.
Is there any good reason for this?
I am considering simply removing the mounts and filling the holes with siliconed plastic plugs and then raising the mounts 3 or 4 inches.
Can anybody see a reason not to do this?
Does anyone have pics of how/where they mounted their roof racks?
Overall height is not an issue. The garage door is 9 feet high and the ceiling 10 feet plus.

Vanagons require what Yakima calls "HiRise Towers" They stick up taller as to fit over the top of the car. The regular towers work, kind of as you have found out.
Check out Rackattack.com. They can give you a price and tell you what rack accesories will fit your van. |

Here are the HiRise Yakima Towers installed. I've had no problems like you described.

Here is a pict of how I installed my rack with my awning. A little planning and it all fits together nicely with no rubbing. |

how much weight can you have on the pop top in the up position? I'm going to be traveling cross country and don't want to have to take the rooftop carrier off everynight to sleep. |

If you attach the mounts high enough you won't need the hi-risers.
I have left two kayaks and a bike on our rack before with the roof up. The problem is lifting it up/down. You will want some help when lifting it up and down. It gets freakin' heavy and it's worse when you lift it down as you can catch the canvas if it comes down too fast. Be careful.
Ciao for now!

My mounts were mounted by the PO down towards the bottom of the pop top. I ordered the Yakima 1A HiRise Spacer Kit on Friday. Hopefully that will help. _________________ 66 Panel < 40,000 mi.
