O.K. folks, this is what I want to run.

165s out back on Empi style five spokes mounted to Thing drums on a '73 bug.

Will the Thing drums make them rub when lowered one to two splines? If so, which tires should I get without them looking as small as the fronts? I wanting the "big-n-littles" look. I know that Thing drums are wider and will push the wheels out about an inch or so, but will it rub?

thanx skim.

I'll be running 5.5" wheels up front with a 4" beam and dropped spindles. Can I run 145/65s sset at the lowest setting without rubbing. Or go with the 135s? I'd rather run a wider front wheel for the rainy season here. Thanx.

145/65s are about an inch shorter than 135s

maybe a little narrow for 5.5s

175/55 i heard is the way to go one the 5.5s

www.tirerack.com

has em both for reasonable prices.

thanx, will a 195/45/15 be too wide for the 5.5s?

I've been looking at Tirerack.com , but the tires they have on the pictures are not the size it says. For instance: I looked up 195/45/15s and it pulled it up with a pic of a 225/45/17. WTF?

in the rain, a skinny tire would have better tracktion. a wider tire could begin to hydroplane where the skinny tire will cut through the water.

A couple of years ago I ran 135s on 4.5" stockies. Whenever I hit a puddle I was all over the place. Then I switched to a 15 x 7 wheel with 195/50/15s ( BFGoodwrench) and it handled like a go-cart in the rain. This is why I don't want to run 135s again.

I understand your point but, from past experience I'll stick to wider ones for now.

there site pics are goofy, but its the only place i can find those two tires.....

i used to run 195/50s on 4.5s/ 4" beam/ front apron about 3.5" from the ground. tires stuck out of the wheel but i liked the look with such stiff sidewall. never rubbed. with another inch of wheel i'm not sure how it would work.

the continentals seem like they were made just for lowered bugs,
if only they had a taller match for the rear.

another thing, it might look a bit goofy with a skinny(ish) 165 in the back and a wider 175 (or bigger) in the front. why not something like a 195 or 205 in the back. or would those rub with the brakes hes planning on using?

I was thinking of using 185/65s out back. I'm not sure if they'll rub with the Thing brakes tho. You make a good point of having a wider wheel out back, it would look silly the other way around.
