I have a 1966 beetle with a stock dizzy and static time the car to 7.5 degrees. But when I hit it with the timing light, it shows 20 degrees on the pulley, instead of 7.5. Any ideas wy this is happening? Thanks

Are you disconnecting the vacuum hose when checking with the timing light? The spring inside the dizzy may be worn.
From http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm "Beetle 1966-1967 - 7.5deg BTDC Static or @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/vacuum hose disconnected and plugged
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum (Advance Only): 17-19deg @ 1.3 In. Hg, 24-28deg @ 3.2 In. Hg". _________________ Joey

I would stick with the static timing if it is running good. Your timing light may be off (weak pick-up signal). Is it steady at 20 or does it wander ..my be a worn dizzy shaft. _________________ Joey

But that would only be with the vacuum hose connected ..its a vacuum advance only dizzy. Is the car 6V or 12V? A timing gun won't work with 6V ..unless it's a 6V gun. _________________ Joey

are you sure you had the timing light clipped to the correct wire? _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

yes it was clipped on wire # 1, it is 12 volts and read 20 degrees at idle... I dont get it... It is a cheap 12 dollar light ... I wonder if that is what the problem is? |

I would blame the cheapy gun. Even the higher priced timing lights will be off a bit, most state on the packaging or in the manual of a +/- 3* accuracy .Stick with the static timing since it's a vacuum advanced only dizzy and it's running good. I have a 65 Beetle with the same type dizzy (vacuum only) and I static time it. _________________ Joey

Just so you know, If you have a 6 volt system you can use a 12 volt timing light on it. Just hook up the 12 volt timing light to a 12 volt battery from another car. Works just fine! _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

I did that once. I thought I clipped it to #1 but it was on #2. It took me a while to figure it out too. Man oh man. _________________ "Want a little peace of mind, grab the lowest branch and start to climb"
