I've got a dual relief 1600sp that came with a 70 Bug I just bought. When I went to adjust the valves I found one head stud nut and washer in the valve cover. Of course the stud is pulling out of the block and it looks like it already has a 10mm stud with a case saver in it. I pulled the motor to see what I had and found at least one more stud pulling on the other side. I measured the endplay and it's .016.

I want this car on the road within a couple weeks and I'm basically out of cash for the time being. Are there any options other then a complete rebuild (on what I'm guessing is a junk case)? I saw CIP1 has 14mm oversize case savers, is this possible to do without spliting the case? Otherwise my thought is just to slap it back together and run it until it gives up the ghost.

doing case savers with the case assembled will leave shavings in the case. I've heard of people trying to flush the shavings out, but that sounds like a major gamble.

A friend of mine made the mistake of buying a gex motor back in the day, and his "new rebuild" spun a bearing 5 miles from his house due to metal shavings in the case.

I'd find a used longblock for low $(offer someone 50 bucks, you never know) check compression, put it in, and save for a reuild.

Your case may or may not be savable, but don't risk screwing something else up. Maybe someone who knows a little better than me will correct me here, but: It seems to me that once the head studs start to pull, it wouldn't be long until they are done for(along with other studs). It also seems that the case could get hammered out with uneven forces due to uneven compression. This could lead to spinning a bearing, or some other catastrophic failure.

on the other hand, there is a guide to checking to see if the studs will hold on yahoo groups. It involves double nutting and tourqing to I believe it was 3 or 4 times the stock torque(withought the heads/jugs installed) If they will hold 3-4X stock touque with no spinning, than you should be in business. is there someone else here who knows the proceedure in detail? but yeah, I think it was on yahoo groups.

Your case may be fixable, but it needs to come apart and looked at by a machine shop. I would not try to tap the hole while the engine is together.

I think it will better to start fresh and have a more reliable motor.

The 10mm dual relief cases have the same problems are the earlier cases. Plenty of nice later cases out there.
