On the other side of the blinker arrows from the oil light, what does the light beneath the (G) do? the light dims down a little bit as the engine is at higher rmps, but is bright at an idle.

In a car with an alternator, if the "G" light (actually Alt light since it now has an alternator fitted) has failed then you will not get any charge from the alternator - it has a tiny sensor current flowing through it even when it's not glowing.

But it should not be glowing much (if at all) when the engine is revved up - it might indicate a bad connection somewhere along it's wiring, since the design is that it sits between the battery and alternator (wiring wise), so if the alternator is not charging properly it will see the battery voltage, and if the battery is fualty it will see the alternator voltage, and glow in either case.
