|
|
I have a '69 Beetle with the ball joint front end and a disk brake conversion kit. The kit, I believe utilizes Ghia rotors+calipers. Anyways, I have a pair of Riviera's that came off of a parts car that I bought, and they won't clear the calipers on my bug; the spokes get caught on the outter most edge of the caliper.
What are all the different types of Rivieras out there? Are there different offsets/backspacing? Can I get longer studs and just use spacers?
Thanks in advance. |

| Spacers would work. Also, what kind of caliper is it? I know when I put a set of discs on my '69, the Empi 8's I was running hit the calipers. It was a very close fitment issue. There was a nickle sized nub that stuck out of the caliper. I ended up just grinding down some of the nub and the rims fit great. No rubbing anywhere. |

| I'm not positive on where the calipers are actually from, but mine have that same nub, I'll have to double check to see if that is what is catching on my rims. |

Ok, I just went out and slapped a Riviera back on to see. The whole caliper is getting hung up on the wheel; basically the caliper sticks half way through 2 of the spokes on the wheel. So, I either need a huge spacer, or theres no way these will go on the front of my car.
So it leaves me wondering, were there differences in Riviera's between the front and rear wheels? The ones I have were on the front of a baja with drums up front.
Oh, and my calipers are Vargo V150 2, if that helps any. |

I bolted a set of Rivs to a drop spindle'd, disc brake '68, and had only the slightest bit of clearence. You couldn't drop a credit card thru there, but they did clear. Here is the only picture I have on hand of it. And the car just sold to Nebraska, so I can't get any better pictures.

I had the same problem. If your RIVS are original, smooth spoke style, they'll hang up on the caliper (or the rim, with a lowered spindle). The repros with the flat faced area are less of a problem, usually fit if they're the newest version, but not always. There were two calipers used, ATE and Girling.
Spacers will work for clearance, but the added stress on the rotor hat, lugs/bolts. and wheel bearings will be too much over the long run.
I ended up going with a different (Sprint Stars) set of wheels.
Luck,

My Rivs don't look exactly like the ones that industryvw posted. The lip on mine are totally flat and slant inwards, not like a traditional lip.
I'd take a picture of mine, but I cant find my camera. So here is a link to an ad, my wheels look exactly like these: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=354514
I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but my car is not using drop spindles, I wanted the Rivieras to be my street wheels on my Baja. |

Yup! Those are the ones! They're the EARLY original RIVS that were sold as after-market wheels for the Porsche 914 and fit those Porsches perfectly. When you try to fit them on a disc brake drop spindle VW, or disc brake conversions you run into trouble.
Like I said/typed I couldn't make them work and had to go with a different wheel entirely. You may be able to come up with something, I ran out of time and patience. |

Ahh, well atleast I know what the heck they are now. I think I'll just sell them and buy a pair of sloted mags to match the pair I already have.
Thanks for the info. |
