I recently bought'73 w/canvas top. Was wondering if I should apply a protectant on outside and which kind. The color is burgundy and don't want to discolor. Don't know manufacturer of top. Also, the steel frame of the top is rubbing against canvas top....any ideas to protect from forming a hole?

I would get it to a top shop asap. If I'm not mistaken, that top should have either a pad, wood, or foam in any area's where the top meet the canvas. i know when we put a new one on my 71 the metal was only touching on the side rails where the springs are attached.

There is padding and foam, but there is one small place on both sides where it is wearing. What about the protectant, like a scotchguard or something?

Sounds like a lot of scotchgaurd to me!!!
I would protect the car's paint before I started the job.
I wouldn't consider doing it.
I keep mine under a cover in the garage or on the road with the top down.
A lite brush gets tough stuff & a lint roller gets the lint.
I've never washed the top, only the car under it.
Good Luck

Also put a rag between the wear items, or get the problem fixed.
Don't let it just wear down.
Good Luck Again

Thanks....I have put some foam pieces on the problem area and I have been doing as you....only washing car, storing in garage and driving with top down. Just wanted to make sure I'm doing all I should. I live in Mississippi and we get a rain out of no where sometimes.
