I have a 72 with a broken turn signal. I took it apart and this is what I found:
-No wire in the spot marked 1 but is jumpered to the wire in number two spot.
-Number two wire has been cut and is not attached. It looks to be teal with a black stripe.
-Wire three is black with a green stripe. I assume it is thee right turn signal from the wiring charts.
-Wire four is black with a white stripe. Wiring chart says left turn signal but that does not make sense as it is on the same side as the right turn signal side.
-Wire 5 empty slot
-Wire 6 appears to be teal. Also cut and going to nothing.
-Wire 7 is black with a white stripe and green candy stripe going around. Should go to the hazard relay.
-Wire 8 is tan with a white stripe. Dimmer switch
-Lastly wire 9 is tan. Ground.
Can anyone tell me what the two cut wires go to and why I am stuck in P.O. hell? Thank you for your time, effort, and support. |

what you have is the rare early 72 switch with 8 wires, just like the 71. most 72 switches have 5 wires. you will need a comprehensive understanding of why they changed it in order to work your way out of this, so read this:
in 71 and early 72 buses, the current for the brake lights passes thru the hazard switch AND the turn signal switch. this is the only way to have both turn signal and brake lights operate on the same bulb filament in the rear, but requires an 8 wire TS switch. the 72 was changed so that the brake light current can travel directly from the master cylinder switch(es) to the seperate bulb filament in the rear. it simplifed construction of dash switches, no doubt saving money- so the factory did it...
but it is common on any year of any bus to see parts on the bus (from the factory) that shouldnt be there! since model years always start on the same day in august, there is no way to make a clean break without wasting parts. so there was a hybrid T.S. switch made, due to an surplus of hazard switches, i would guess? anyway it has the look and plastic, no chrome construction of a 72 5-wire switch, with the 8 wires and the 8 wire function of a 71
many possible scenarios as to why you have a chopped 8 wire:
1)some of your wires may be cut because the 8 wire TS switch came out of a another donor bus to replace your original 5 wire switch (if thats what you had from the factory)... OR
2)it originally had the 8 wire switch and somone just F'ed it up... OR
3) it originally had an 8 wire TS switch, and someone tried to rewire the bus to act like the later 5 wire setup, complete with the direct brake lights.
to find out, you need to go to the back and verify whether or not your brake light and directionals are lighting up the same bulb FILAMENT. also check to see if you have any red and black stripe wires going into the hazard switch. if yes to both questions then you have the 8 wire setup for brakes, and you will have to repair or replace that hybrid switch.
i dont know why your wire colors dont appear to match the typical 8 wire setup. it should be two brown wires, one black, white and green stripe. the other five should be striped black and: green, white, yellow, red and violet.
i do have a hybrid 72 8 wire switch... if you just want to get it over with, it could be bought. OR, if you think it can be repaired, that is also an option. you can send me a private message (PM) if you are interested. just click on the PM icon at the bottom of my message. i have a pictures of the switch so you can see how all three look: 71, 72-8, 72-5 |
