|
|
Took the rear AC and the overhead ducts out of my 1990 tintop this weekend in the service of turning the rear housing into storage and providing a little more headroom in the 'living area.'
Now trying to figure out what to do with the front vents. Ideas? Anyone have pics of modifications of this part?
Maybe make some kind of storage shelf out of it?

put the vents back in and have "hidden" storage behind them. make the vents stay put with Velcro for easy access. |

I was thinking gold bullion, cash, and jewelry. |

Some neat ideas, I also removed my old not functioning overhead AC. What I was planning, was to try to find some sort of hi output fans that I could put in there to get a bit of extra moving air when it's hot outside. |

I really hate to see people remove the AC from these vans, 'cause it really is a sweet feature when it's running correctly. I'm coming up on a full decade with my van, and I've never opened up the system; just topped up every couple years. I would prefer to have an in-dash arrangement, but having that cold air blowing on the back of your neck is nice. _________________ Casey--

I'm further north than you and I use mine every summer. It's so nice to roll up the windows and keep out the fumes and stink of the city. Not to mention those road trips south!
I'm so happy I have AC after so many years without! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

K, now for the dumb question.... WTF on these front vents!?!?!?!?
I had factory AC and only had rear vents. FWIW, when I turned the AC motor on I would get air flow coming out of the lower vents.
Maybe they didn't put these front vents in westies??? _________________ previous:

No front vent in westys. Same rear fan assembly but a different housing (no cabinets) and a tunnel goes up to the front on tin tops. The tunnel would have to go right through the bunk area on a Westy.
You could pop it out and go to the non-AC visors:
My '85s are like this and it makes the cabin/windshield feel much bigger from the driver's seat than my '89 with ac. _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

I like the idea, maybe I'll do that. I am such a storage space fiend though!
It does seem like a good place to put some guages, perhaps right where the drivers side vents are now. |

You could take it out and put a cluster housing in above the rear view mirror...then you don't have a big empty box eating up your personal space... _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

My tunnel had to go with addition of a CHC top and I was glad to have that front piece gone. I considered turning it into storage shelves for sunglasses, wallet, etc. but I preferred more open space. _________________ '77 Bay Window / '89 Caratsburg (aka. the Stormtrooper) |
