|
|
Hi, I searched but still didn't find the answer.
I have a tank which I believe is correct for my 57, but the PO had put a pipe on the outlet instead of the correct valve. I just remove the abortion pipe (brazed a pipe to a nut) and my new valve from WW will not fit on the threaded portion coming out of the tank. How is this suppose to fit in? Is it just a threaded nipple?
A quick answer would be most appreciated as I am tanking the tank to be cleaned.
Thanks

The fuel reserve should have a reverse threaded nut on it. You remove the nut off the valve. Then sandwich the nut between the tank outlet threads & the fuel reserve valve. When you turn the nut, it'll draw both the outlet & the valve together- Sort of like a heim joint. |

RareAir,
I see what you mean. But the thread on the tank is smaller than the thread on the reserve valve nut. I'm thinking that the PO put in a different nipple. Or is the thread on the tank welded or molded as part of the tank?

VW originally press fit & spot welded the threaded outlet into the tank. |

Thanks, I took it to the shop for an estimate. Unfortunately the guy that gives the prices wasn't there but the worker guessed $200-250. That's to clean, coat the inside and possibly fix the fitting (wasn't sure about the fitting though).
I got home and wire brushed the paint from the fitting and I see what you mean. The threaded outlet is definetly not correct. I am getting a lot of parts this weekend and I think that there is a tank in it so I will see what that one looks like. Hopefully it will be in better shape or at least have the correct fitting (maybe I can make one out of two).
Does the price given seem about right to boil out and coat the tank?
Any other suggestions are welcome. I just want the correct valve to work as designed, I'm not too concerned about it being 100% correct as this will not be a show car.
Thanks again _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

$200-$250 seems high. You can buy a restored tank ready to go for less than that |

That's what I thought, a little high.
Do you know where I can get a restored one? Couldn't find much listed here lately.
Thanks again, your help is most appreciated. _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

Thanks, I tried them. Unfortunately none seem to have it.
Just found it on the BFY site, but it doesn't say if it was restored though the picture looks good. Also it has a hole in the top of something (fuel gage I guess), which I don't need.
edit: I just called them, they don't have any either. _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

Since you're in Massachusetts, get a hold of either John Henry or Gary Constantine. Both of whom just might have what you're looking for in their stock pile of parts |

Thanks, I know John as he did some work on my car. Great work and a great guy. I don't know Gary.
I will see what I get from picking up the lot of parts this weekend before deciding on a route. At least now I know what to look for.

what list? your list? no thank you. i don't want to be on anyones list. my privacy and my time matters not only to me, but my family. sure i help people. i also respect peoples privacy. i also don't go volunteering peoples names and time without their permission. i also don't have a history of ripping people off. never, not once. i also don't live with my parents. i also never pretend to own anything that i don't, drive anything that i don't drive, nor do i pretend that i did work that i never did, or raced motorcycles when i didn't. i never made out like i found 15 steeringwheels in one day by 8:30am in a single swap meet. in general, i would say there isn't an inescapable black cloud of rumors that hovers over me.
i'm just a normal guy with an average amount of knowledge and a life outside volkswagens.
am i as intelligent as you? no. i went to art school. do i criticize anyone because they can't draw or paint? no. that would be in bad character and bad breeding. i'm also not trying to reach internet fame so i can cover up the trail of wreckage that i've created. did you have any other questions?
all i have is my word. without that, who cares what i know about VWs. i'd be empty inside. _________________ Extravagant Lifestyle

Hi, I'm out in Mass as well (western) but I think I have an extra tank or 2 if worse comes to worse with the one you've got there. The estimate you were quoted sounds awfully high for cleaning and boiling a gas tank. There's an old radiator shop here that boils them out and coats them, for around 100 I think (it's been a few years). If you need anything for your car, let me know!

Where in my statement did I volunteer John or Gary's help? I merely suggested that he (ssbn659) attempt to contact either Gary or John as they live in the same vacinity of the country. You need to get off your stool and read a little better to understand what I wrote. Your loose interpretation of my words shows your ignorance of the English language.
As for your "word" that don't mean much either. For the past 5 years you've been proclaiming that I never rode for team Visual Perfection/Ducati in the 1998-2001 AMA Pro Thunder race series. Well, with you being a member of my fan club, I'm suprised you haven't been able to locate photos. So, I'll dig through my files and find one sometime today. What will it prove? I have no idea. But to some, it'll show your ignorance on a subject to which you have no knowledge of and show that you've been literally lying to anyone that was willing to listen to your useless banter. |

ssbn659 is asking for help, and you're naming names. if that isn't clear enough, here is what you wrote in the other thread in the split forum 3 minutes after your post here where you named them

keep the focus on your own language skills and you won't keep tripping over what you said to who. ayt?

ssbn659,
I was reading your very interesting thread and I know of a guy, a sign painter living in Philadelphia which you may know is in Pennsylvania. He is a sign painter who collects mostly old bus parts like those funny looking bumpers you used to see on commercial trucks, but may be able to help you with your fuel tank question if John Henry or Gary Constantine cannot. His name is Gibbs Conners. He is kind of a recluse, a hermit if you will, never leaves the house. He looks a bit like a cross between Ted Kaczinski and Jeff Spicoli. If he really likes you and you ask nicely, he may be willing to show you his "rising sun" tattoo. I'm not sure how to find him, though. If I can come up with a way to contact him, I'll post again later in this thread. |
