As some of you may know I just had some work done on my automatic transmission on my 87 Westy. It started with a leaking torque converter seal, and since it was out I went for the full seal and gasket kit. Just got it back from the mechanic (not set up to do this kind of work myself). There seems to be a bit of a new "quirk" though.

When I am driving slow (30kmph) and I want to accelerate, the RPMs will respond with the gas pedal however there is a noticeable delay before the van responds. I step on the gas, RPM jumps to 3500, slight delay, and then the van starts to catch up. it is almost as if something is slipping. Doesn't seem to happen at highway speeds though. The response time seems correct then. Any ideas as to what is going on? I want to hear from you guys before I go back to the mechanic. It makes me sound smarter.

Make sure you've got the ATF level right, by the book, when hot. I know very little about them, but in my exerience servicing them in the past, slow response was often an indication of insufficient fluid.

I did check the ATF and it actually seemed too high. Could that cause the problem?

Possibly.

It needs to be correct, when hot.
