When i down shift from third gear into second gear I have to slow down super slow to eliminate the grinding noise. It will still slip into gear it just grinds briefly. Any ideas on the best way to adjust or fix this?

I recommend you replace your gear oil with a synthetic GL-4 gear oil. Avoid GL-5 gear oil since they can make grinding worse. My choice is Redline MT-90 gear oil.

Have you checked the gear oil level in the transaxle? With the side plug removed (17mm Allen style), the fluid should be near the bottom of the opening. When I learned how to drive my VW, I was taught to raise the engine rpm slightly before downshifting into 3rd and 2nd from the higher gear, but never into first while moving. Does it still grind if you rev it a little just before you shift it into 2nd?

The change in gear can help if the syncro is not all the way worn out.

If the oil change does not help the grinding, the only fix is to replace the syncronizer inside the tranny. The longer it is waited to fix the syncro problem, the worse the shift hub for 2nd gear will wear and may also need replacing.

Thanks for all the help. I have fresh topped off gear oil in it. I still have yet to try synthetic or revving the engine a little before downshifting. I will try both. Thanks

I had the same problem.....it was the syncros.

It cost me $350.00 to have the trans gone through replacing reverse gear, welding third and fourth, new main bearing and replacing the worn out sycros.
Everything else was in great shape.
