So the power window on the passenger side has decided to stop working; with the window down. We have ruled out the switch and the fuse. Pretty sure it is the motor. The drivers side window works fine.
I know that I have seen in the past a link regarding converting the power windows to manual, but I haven't had any luck finding the link again... but is it worth that... if I replace the motor is it really that expensive and you think that I would get at least another 10 some years out of a new motor
what do you think? |

The motor is not unique to Vanagons. But before you run off and do anything rash use some jumper wires and run 12 volts directly to the motor. you can reverse the polarity of the wires to make it go up and down. If it works by direct connection, then it is your switch. You may find that the Quantuma nd other VW/Audi products of the same vintage share the motor. You also may be able to just remove the motor. It usually is corrosion on the bottom bearing freezing it up.
Myself and a couple of other Vanagon owners have noticed our passenger side windows go up slower than the drivers side. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

Here's a few things to do prior to going off on a wild goose chase figuring out why the R/H glass isn't going up and down.
First check it out for a broken wire in the boot between the door hinge post and the door, on both sides.
It's a pretty common thing for the wires to break off inside the boot.
Next--and while your at the R/H door test for juice to the motor with an ice pick circuit tester.
Operate the switch, and stick the wires or terminals with the probe.
It'll tell you right away if your getting power to the motor.
Last but not the least, check out the grounding terminal block on the driver's side buried under the dash and bolted the back side of the front cowel panel.
If the ground is all corroded the motor will refuse to operate. _________________ T.K. |

thank you for all the tips... today is devoted to getting the window up again, at the very least.
Is there a way to get the window glass manually up if the motor is shot? |

If you take the motor out, you will see it has a worm gear. Once it is out, and the worm is no longer locking the spur gear in place, it should lift up. However you will then need to either re-insert the motor or find a way to block it up. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

pop off the passenger door pannel. find the 2 prong connecter, reverse it(plug it backwards,it won't fit, you have to force it) now try to raise the window(key on) if it goes up than the yellow/black wire is open(broken)
good luck _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

I found that the yellow and black wire is broken in half. I am going to see if I can find the other end of the wire and try splacing back together just to see if I can atleast get the window back up. |

my window would not go up on the driver side. I ordered a switch and have the panel off to see the guts. I found a black uturn type thing broken inside the door. The motor makes a click when you try to roll up or down but that is it. Is my motor shot? Is it somthing todo with the broken black thing.
Any help would be greatly appriciated. I can not find a diagram of those wires that drive the window up and down to see how they work.
Thanks,
John |

You'll 9 times outa 10 find a broken wire in the door loom when the window's, speaker's or door locks fail--always.
It's pretty much rule of thumb the first place to start when one of the item's above mentioned fail. _________________ T.K. |
