I was watching an RC maintenance vid for a nitro powered car over the weekend. They had a fancy tool that screwed in place of the spark plug to stop the piston. It let them wrench on the flywheel etc. without having some other way to hold the crank from turning.

Have any of you thought of using something like that on a VW motor? It would have to be strong as balls so it didn't strip things out.

Flywheel lock works fine on a VW motor.

The hole in the piston might pose a problem. Only thing it would be good for would be to find true TDC.

The torque applied to small engine used in RC racing is way different then large scale internal combustion engines...

My Stihl chainsaw and weed whacker motors have a plastic (nylon?) piece to insert through spark plug hole to act as positive stop..... And I have heard of threading a length of nylon rope through spark plug hole to "fill" combustion chamber for positive stop.... But if you are going to put a bolt through spark plug hole and gronk 200-300 ft pounds of torque to tighten (or looses) flywheel , you might consider the time and effort to tear motor down again and replace bent rod and punctured piston.... Use of positive stop and degree wheel can be useful for finding TDC but with no torture applied the is little danger...

Flywheel stop or mechanics helper or nothing in my shop...

The rope thing works.......specifically ski rope. We changed a broken valve spring at the lake in a jet boat with a piece of ski rope to hold the valve up.
