I have a customer that want to use a performance T-1 clutch disc instead of the stock T-4. The T-4 discs are made for the 200 mm 210 mm 215 mm and 228mm flywheels. I have been running 210 for years. I know even though the dics is much smaller they work. My question is can you use a Type I disc with the the 228mm T-4 clutch. I believe that one had differences.

Joe, sure you can, just won't have full contact on the pressure plate and will have accelerated wear relative to a 228mm disk. The stock 228mm clutch can really grab. Why have a 200mm disk? Customer hates spring cushion disks that much hu? Laughing

I agree totally, and that is what I tried to tell the guy. This may sound crazy but the first T-4 upright Cali Style engine I built back in the late 90's took months and I had no idea what to expect. Well the car started sounded great and now all I had to do was drive it up my steep 100 ft driveway to the street.

The first difference I felt after all the T-1 engines I built was the gripping power of the clutch on that hill. Being made for a Bus my 1700 lb bug was nothing.

Yes it does sound crazy but I guess the only way I would use the much smaller surface area T-1 disc would be if I had no other choice.

Actually when I first started building T-4's the discs were expensive. I worked near a place in Manhattan that relined drum brakes for NYC Cabs, the guy said he would redo my old bus and 914 discs, I actually still have one of those in my bug. $25 each.
