|
|
I just finished installing hand controls in my Vanagon. I didn't like the way the universal bracket looked so had a custom bracket fabricated.
The first step is to take a few measurements and sketch the part using CAD.
Then email the drawings over to my uncle's metal fab shop and pick up when it's ready.
Next install the bracket and adjust hand controls to fit.
Standard disclaimer: Only authorized dealers are to install hand controls. No animals were harmed during the installation or fabrication process. _________________ Kenneth

I've seen a few VW factory (or maybe dealer) installed handicap vans. They came with a ramp and the hand controls already installed.
Seems like one of those things that if you can find a van already equipped, you can get them for no more than the standard vans because if you don't need the equipment you aren't willing to pay any extra for it. If you need the equipment I bet it costs quite a bit to get all that stuff new and have it installed professionally. I've actually thought about getting one for myself so I could easily load engines and other heavy stuff into the back with the wheelchair lift.
Looks like you did a nice job installing that stuff, I hope it makes it so you or whoever you were installing it for will be able to keep mobile and keep enjoying the van! |

Used hand controls show up on ebay quite often, and the price is reasonable compared to having a new set installed.
I'm still working on the ramp to get in. It's a Westy, and all the lifts I've seen installed in Vanagons do not allow the bed to fold out. Since I installed H&R springs to lower it some, I can transfer from the chair to the seat, but it is still quite a chore. _________________ Kenneth

Just curious vwfreek, I assume you enter the van from the slider, then transfer to the driver's seat. Is that right?
A friend of mine had his modern (Chrysler I think) van fitted out for him. Expensive! He drives from his wheel chair. I assume this is not possible in a VW due to the uneven floor in the front.
Great project you've got there! _________________ '88 VW Westfalia
