Looks like someone is finally marketing a 14" RBG kit in the US now:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1731114

Anyone got their hands on one yet? Pics? Opinions?

Looks pretty close to my own ideas and mockups... Very Happy

Please read their feedback before sending them money.

I know nothing about this kit. However I did purchase a 4" narrowed beam and dropped spindles from Vintage V-dubs. I received what I ordered in a reasonable shipping time, at a fair price, and high quality products. From the research I did on their negative feedback, it appears that it was from previous years with a former business partner. Bottom line, I recommend them.

I don't really get the need/want to have rear disc brakes on a stock bus

having front ones makes sense but rears? it's not like you're going to be doing 80mph in it and most newer cars that regularly do those speeds only have front discs Rolling Eyes

seems like a waste of money to me when you look at the price vs. the benefits IMO

I like 4 wheel discs for the simple fact that I HATE adjusting drums.

Their feedback is pretty awful for the most part though. I'd pass based on that alone.

tired of wheel cyls of every quality blowing out.

but more importantly, tired of adjusting the brakes every 3-6k.

reducing maintenance intervals is a good thing. Smile

Fair point.

I have seen some of Bruce's other work first hand over the years, though - so excluding the typical vw fab shop that can't keep up with doing business - I might be inclined to let my credit card company gamble.

But first, there's still the original question - anyone managed to see/touch/install/use a set? Smile

Yeah.... any brake will brake (even your feet sticking through the floor Wink ; and best of all: they're free Shocked ).....I like discs on a split bus definitely in the front, and preferably also in the rear...why?
Load up a fully equipped Westy split bus fully with roof racks front and back loaded up and a bicycle on the tow hitch..... speed up to only 60 mph on the freeway and then try slowing down with drums only, and then talk to me again Laughing

If someone were to go 4-wheel disc brakes would you just hook them all up normally to the master without any gizmos like residual pressure or proportioning valve?

Could you use a single circuit master (if you had to).

been there done that 20+ years of driving buses both stock and custom never really had a issue with the stock set-up when they were properly installed and maintained

like I said I can see the benefit from front disc just can't justify the benefit of these rear ones vs the expense IMO

if a disc kit fit a 63 1-ton rear, then the advantage is clear (part availability). 63 1-ton is 1 yr only drums (64 size drum on small nut rear end), the drums for 63 are tough to find NOS, not remanufactured, and getting old on many a 63 bus.

of course I could swap to a 62 rear end or upgrade to a 64....but I digress.

Id switch to disc now to maintain my 63, and keep original parts for the future restorer when my kids dont want to drive the double cab or worse I cant keep it running due to available parts and it sadly becomes show only vehicle in 20+ yrs.

Refresh my memory - that's a small nut 1 ton, right? for small nut, I suspect there are a number of ~~doable solutions from the 4 lug world.

if it's big nut, can't think of any reason it shouldn't work - bracket bolts to the adjuster and wheel cyl bolts. What makes it 1 year? stub axle length maybe?

Well adjusted brakes don't always cut it depending on what you are hauling or what road you are driving on.

Back in the day when I lived in Virginia.
My ride was not a split bus. Heading down the mountain in a 68 bay was very scary compared to my other bay that was a 71 which made a huge difference with disc brakes.

As far as the rear disc brakes go, I don't think it makes much of a difference since most of your braking in in the front.

All the Kool Kids have four wheel discs. Cool

Now that these guys are banned, anyone else know of a rear kit for 14" with rgb? Tried Oldspeed but got no response.

I'm almost to where I can start mocking up the pile of random parts that I got from vvd. Entirely unimpressed with the quality of the resulting product.

I'll document it with pictures. And details from the transaction.

Maybe now (that I have a set of redux boxes that are not attached to a transmission) I'll get some time to work on my own design again too.

I briefly looked at putting disc brakes onto a RGB trans but I didn't see a feasible way to prevent it from getting wider. That's as far as I got. I may revisit the idea later.

Maybe its a dumb idea, but has anyone tried to shorten the axle/tube, run offset spring plates to get more room?

because I never got around to posting this - yeah, it's years later. Wink

the crap I got was a pile of shit. he never provided any documentation, nor responded to questions after I got the parts. the left side parts were different from the left in little ways. the spacers were cut different heights....

I never did figure out how they might have supposed to have fit. At best it would have required drilling out some of the RGB case bolts to stick through-bolts in their place to hold a bracket.

complete waste of money (which I already knew had a >50% chance before I went into this) - at least I didn't have to buy the entire "kit" to find out.
