Hey all - I just aquired a 59 baja beetle with no motor or transmission . I got the car for free , and still have to go get it . I haven't seen it yet , but I figured the price is right . I am planning in running a late model bus 2.0L engine and a bus transaxle . The question I have is would it be recommended to run the bus reduction boxes or not ? I know this car is running a swing axle rear end , but I may switch over to a later year floor pan with IRS and ball joint beam . Any advise would be great .

my 2 cents is that it depends on what you want. If you want to get out of the hole quickly and dont care about top end, go with the reduction box. If doing wheel stands and burn outs aint your bag & you want a little better top end, run without them.

Just what kind of reduction do the boxes provide? Are we talking like a 2 or 3 to 1? Anybody got the numbers?

it's nowhere near that much. 1.3 to 1.5ish? they're original intent was just to ease the load on the engine pushing the heavier busses down the road.
