I'm not mechanically inclined but I put a new clutch in my 86 vanagon gl. 2 months later when I put the clutch in it would grind very bad!! When I brought the clutch up it would stop? So today I took out the tranny to check the clutch and the pilot bearong was shot!! The input shaft is very loose and when I put the new pilot bearing on the shaft it is very loose!! that is not good rite? So I thought I would replace the input shaft so I called around (bus depot, van cafe had one for 290.00) and they are no longer available?? Where can I find one? Does anyone have a used one? Thanks

A pilot bearing slid on may feel loose even if everything's OK... but a worn shaft is quite obvious.... the tip's burned and there's a distinct ridge. $290 may be the market price for a new one, but a good used one can likely be found for 1/10th that.
