when installing a new generator stand, does that metal gasket with the louvers face down with the louvers to the right? does the paper gasket go on top of that or on the bottom?

I never got a good answer on this. My choice was to put the louvers down with the opening on the right. My thinking was this...

With the louvers down, when you add oil, it is easier for the oil to go through the louver and into the crank case. If the louver was up, it would be a little more difficult for the oil to go through the slots

With the slot on the right side, the slot is covered by the louver. As the crank spins and oil is flung off, it then hits on the closed side of the louver and not the open side.

I always tried to sandwich it between 2 paper gaskets.

But the truth is it probably makes no difference how you install it.

I put the louvers facing passenger side down , I put a little permatex on case then metal louvers , gasket and a little bit on the bottom of alt. stand .Dont take much to seal this part.

Also, according to the Bentley Manual, paper gaskets are to be installed above and below the metal deflector plate.

not like later 1300-1600. they had a square metal piece but they also had a tube that went upwards instead of fins. but then you may want to check with back issues of vwt magizine. Very Happy
