Hello everyone, this is my first post so I thought I would post a picture of my 1957 oval. It will give you all something to talk about. Mike.

Well, should I state the obvious? Did you graft it in? |

Looks like the zwitter of its time? What should we call it if you didn't graft it? |

The original owner back in 1957 decided that he wanted his pride and joy to look more "modern". At the time VW produced a kit to convert oval windows to square windows, so he had it done . I can't make up my mind whether to have it returned to an oval, or to keep it as it is. I think it is the only one in existence in the UK although I could be proved wrong. |

It would've been more fun if vw had produced a few odd cars just to use up parts!
You're steering wheel is on the right side by the way |

I don't really see the point of putting a steering wheel on the left |

Actually, the heater vents were moved back in mid December of '56. This is probably an early or mid 57 oval, which would make the heater vent locations correct. |

I thought that all ovals had oval shaped vents? I have never seen an oval with straight vents. |

Thanks for the pics and the history of the car.
There was some discussion last year about the oval dash big window cars. Some pics of your car appeared in that discussion:

Not saying anything is incorrect just making an observation. I find it interesting that the complete dash is reversed for the right hand drive, but they kept the hood release on the left. Kind of inconvienient for the driver. |

My hood release is also on the passenger side (right). It's an Australian car, but it is inconvenient to move to the left to release the hood! |

Hi thanks for the information on the thread which I have read with great interest. It appears that my car has been the subject of some speculation. I do not have the history of my car in documented form, only word of mouth. Having said that, I am in great doubt that the rear window is aftermarket. I have looked long and hard at it and can find absolutely no evidence of any joins or welding. I guess that I am going to have to remove part of the headlining to confirm if there is a join. In the meantime if anyone is still interested in this debate I am willing to take further close up photographs to try and get to the bottom of it. |

To my knowledge there was only 1 company making the kits. They made split to oval kits, and oval to big windows kits.
There has never been any documentation showing that the VW factory made them. Maybe if a customer had an oval and he took it to the dealer, they fitted the aftermarket kit for the customer. And, going by what you said in an earlier post, that is more than likley what happened to your Beetle.
Out of curiosity, what do the vents under the rear window look like?

The same was done to some split windows. I saw a 1950 model the other day that had been converted to an oval window by (the first?) owner |
