I have asked a lot of quesions about engines lately but I have one more. From what i have been told is the stock engine in my 1970 bus is a 1600. The only difference between engine in the type 1 bug 1600 and my 70 bus is where the mustach bar hooks up to.. If this is correct what is a type 2 engine and a type 4 engine. Also what is a pancake engine.
Thanks,
Eric |

o.k.
a type 2 engine refers to an upright type 1 engine that goes in a bus AKA a type 2 VW
a type 4 engine is the "pancake" engine that go in 1972 and later busses.
you may also hear people refer to type 3 engines as pancake engines.
they are not the same as a type 4 engine.
some people that dont drive ACVWs may even refer to the air cooled VW engine in general as a pancake motor. |

| So an older type 2 engine is the same as a type 1. What do you mean upright type 1 engine. |

pretty much the only difference is the threaded holes in the block on either side of the oil pump plate for the mustache bar to bolt to.
heres an upright engine type 1. with a mustache bar, it would be a type 2
type 4 pancake for 72 and later bus
heres a type 3 engine which may also be referred to as a pancake motor

One more question. Is engine tin the same on the type 1 and type 2. The reason I am asking is my transmission is junk in my 66 bug. I have a rebuilt 1600 in it. Will I be able to just switch them over or will i need to change the tin to put the engine in my 70 bus. thanks for all you help
