My generator pulley currently has tabs from the back pulley through the front. I know this is incorrect. I purchased a smooth pulley set and found out it is for a split. (anyone want to buy a split pulley set?) I then purchased another smooth set that look correct, BUT it is a larger diameter than the split pulleys. Is this right or do I still have the wrong pulleys? Also when did the front pulley go from the thin lip to the thicker lip? |

Thanks. I have read the thread, (like a 1000 times) but it doesn't quite any of my questions. In fact someone says that the only difference between a split generator pulley and the 54 pulley is the front, but I have a split pulley that is smooth on the back and the 54 has the cut outs for a screwdriver pry lock, I think... Also is the 54 the same diameter as the split cause I have larger ones? |

i'm gonna guess that your "split" pulley that has no slot is really a type 3 pulley. a type 3 used a pulley half with no slot because they pulley locking mechanism was part of the pulley "cap", and i think they are a slightly smaller diameter than a type 1 pulley. there has to be some kind of slot for an upright engine. otherwise, how would you lock the pulley to loosen/tighten the nut?
from a '51 owner's manual
why don't you post some clear close up pics of what you have. |

Thanks. Like I was saying the pulley currently on the generator (which is a Porsche generator) has tongs extending from the back pulley through the front, BUT it is the same diameter as the early split pulley. I am so confused. Hey one more thing, how do I post a pic to the forum? |

Im also wondering what are the real facts for the 54 front pully. Seems like reading and looking at the posted images some pullys in 54 have the really thin section profile similar to the 25hp. In other photos of 54's i see a semi thin slightly deeper front pully, this in fact seems to be more common on the 55's. My conclusion is that the 54s not all came with a slightly thinner front pully, the 55's were slightly deeper but not as think as the later 56 and on types. But the both use the big fat nut, and both had no prongs. Those are my eyes at work. |
