As far as cooling, do you think I should go for the roof scoop or mounted in the back where the cowl is? And if I do go for the cowl, inside with the scoop or on the outside. I'm thinking inside, to catch air going over the car, and to keep out of the sun so the oil isn't preheated too much. But are the roof scoops worth the $100 extra bucks?

There are some good oil coolers that have fans attathed and you can add a thermostat. Just don't mount it so the engine fans draws the hot air back into the shroud. Also don't mount it so it will get damaged by rocks are other junk that might damaged or punture it. I have mounted mine on the cowl in 3 baja's I built. Good luck, Smile

the roof scoop is not needed unless u have a huge engine. just a external sitting on top of car or somwhere so the outside air hits it. just dont put in the engine area or u will be defeating the point of a external one. also the oilcool with fan is a good idea as long as fan blows away from engine.

I hope you are talking about adding the above coolers and not replacing the stock coolers. You must keep the oil cooler where the fan can pull air across the cooler. If you want to just use the cooler on top, just remember you will not have decent cooling when speeds go below 30 or 40 MPH. Vic www.vwhelp.com VW Parts Books with VW part numbers.

I mounted mine on the cowl and added an aluminum scoop on top of it to force air thru it. Don't know how well the scoop worked but I never had any overheating problems.
