What do you mean by "hide a way"? More ground clearance? There's a few different styles. You could go with the split-style that has two mufflers, each tucked up by the heads:
http://www.thethingshop.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=181DH
This is NOT a performance system - joining cylinders 1&2 then 3&4 together does not yield a good extractor. The nice part is that it's up out of the way and exits the bumper holes. The bad part is it will slightly decrease performance and it's harder to set the valves. I have one of these that I'm getting rid of - it's pretty old and if anyone wants to come get it here in Sunnyvale, CA, they can have it.
You can go with a Monza system similar to this:
But I don't think it tucks as high as the split header. It's a better system for performance and for setting the valves though. The Thing version will exist the holes in the bumper properly.
(I couldn't find any good pictures or links to the Thing version and I know some in here use that... anyone want to chime in?)
You could probably also go with a Sidewinder exhaust:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=264089
It won't exist the holes in the bumper, but it's up and out of the way. It's a good extractor exhaust - probably the best performing of those listed here. I've never seen one installed on a Thing, but I assume it'll be hard to set the valves on the right side. It's probably the most expensive of the three here as well.

What Ian siad x2.
You will want a merged header system for better performance and easy access to your valves. The hideaway sytem from the Thing Shop won't give you that.
Here is the ACI ceramic coated exhaust:
It's not stock, but it isn't obtrusive either and has plenty of clearance. I love how the tail pipes go through the bumper as it is very unique. Other than being loud it's not a bad set up. _________________

I'm ordering a "Wild Boar" exhaust through Serrano's VW. That's the same deal as what's pictured above, right?
PS: Looks like I could eat out of your engine bay! _________________ DAVE

I don't think what I have is called the "Wild Boar". I got my exhaust from ISP West via eBay.
They are calling it the "181 EURO 2 TIP MUFFLER EXHAUST SYSTEM". I got the matching ceramic coated heater boxes from someplace else (either CIP or Mid-America), but I think ISP sells the heater boxes too.
They claim that ceramic coating will be rust free, but I started getting rust stains pretty quickly. Just stains though mostly around the welds.
As far as eating out of the engine bay... after a long trip you could definately fry an egg or two in there!! And I can always weld a fork to the top of my dipstick! _________________

Ian
I wish I knew about your muffler pack before I bought one in Tahoe last year. It is a pain to adjust the valves and I want to replace it.
That will happen when I switch engines. _________________ 63 singlecab

I have the S&S system that exits through the bumper:
I have no idea how it affects performance, but it seems to allow for valve access. I'll find out for sure next week when I take my first shot at adjusting the valves myself. _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

Here's the one I'm putting on my car. Ceramic-coated Bugpack 1 3/8" header + Hideaway muffler from aircooled.net.

Keep in mind that many of these systems extend past the bumper. I once had the S&S system on mine, but got rid of it because I didn't like the thought that a tap from behind would ruin my engine or exhaust or both.
The Bugpack one will probably also extend past the bumper.
Of those listed here, the following probably offer the best performance as they all appear to be 4:1 extractor systems:
Sidewinder
EMPI
S&S
Bugpack
Note that the Bugpack, S&S, and EMPI all use the same header design. Of the lot, I think only the Sidewinder has a chance of not extending past the rear bumper. If I still had a type1, that's the one I'd go with. |

Would the bumper overrides from The Thing Shop be able to protect the exhaust & engine much from a "li'l love tap" from the rear?
--- EDIT ---
Okay, I lied: it doesn't look like The Thing Shop carries them anymore. Y'all know what I'm talking about, though.

Good point, Ian. There is that risk, but maybe since the pipes are already bent, they would deform before doing much damage to the engine?
I'm running a Beetle muffler with peashooters right now, and that's surely more of a hazard to my engine than any of the above! _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

I used to have the same narrow bumper overriders shown in the pic above, and the S&S reached farther back than they did. Maybe the block style ones would do it. |

Sam, that split header system makes it tough to adjust the valves - worse than the S&S system. |

The muffler/ exhaust questions and threads should be made a sticky.
Seems like every couple of months we cover it all over again. |

How bad could it be if the stock one is similar? Do you still have that exhaust? I have mucho friends in the area, that could come and get it for me? _________________
