I am Having major problems with my 67 westy!! I had to remove the rear for a bunch of things ,nose cone swap, trans seal, brake job...... My problems is I can not, for the life of me, remove the oil deflector off the axel stub. When I tried to remove the bearing cover the seal and the oil deflector stayed put. I don't want to bang to much around the bearing as I tried to get a thin scraper to separate them. Any ideas to get this damn part off!!! Thanks for any and all ideas!!! |

I have had the same problem, before. I jammed my upper leg beneath the stub axle to give it support, put a chisel against the inside of the spacer, then carefully tapped it with a hammer, going around with the chisel, until there was enough of a gap that the arms on my puller would fit behind the spacer. You have to be careful so the bearing doesn't get damaged, though. |

I bought a 2 arm puller but the sleeve is beveled so the jaws won't hold!!! I tried an air chisel(being very cautious). I tried to force a fine pointed chisel in betwwen the spacer and bearing. ANY other way to remove this spacer without destroying the bearing.. This is really sucking monkey balls!!! |

Maybe use this type of puller instead?
Available at your local Harbor Freight.
you may need to get longer bolts.
Then there is also the heat thing to try and loosen it up.

There's a lot of material in threads related to this as everyone seems to get stuck by this problem once in their lives. A propane torch with a fine flame tip round-and-round will help expand the ring. After that I use a thick putty knife, the kind for paint scraping or gasket removal, and hit in between the bearing and the spacer all around. Since you got the backing plate off you can hit with a long driftpunch from behind on the slinger part, outward, to try and free it. Some cut it off and replace it. If you trash it somehow just replace it. |

I just went through this.
After spending two days pounding, torching, prying, cursing and accidentally slicing my thumb, I enlisted one of my trusty friends with an angle grinder & cut off wheel to cut the sucker off. _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.

The tool that Transported recommended is a good one. At a tool store, I just bought the tool that fits behind a bearing or spacer, then used a regular puller with two arms to pull on it. As I stated earlier, I whacked a thin chisel or chisel-like punch with a hammer (carefully), with the chisel behind the spacer, after spraying PB blaster on the axle several times. Once there was a little gap, I put that tool behind the space and tightened it down, and pulled it off with a puller. |

That is the tool that I had used to remove the last stuck spacer on a stub axle. It cost something like $15 at a local tool store and, at the time, I was wondering why I had never bought one, before. Everyone should own one. |

Good job! Now emory cloth the stub axle and the inside of the spacer and use a tiny bit of anti-seize when you reassemble it. |
