To the people who have a roof rack:
I really want to add a roof rack to my bug. But I heard will be noise when you go 30mph, is that right? If yes, how bad it is?

Thank you,
Mojan

I would say its no big deal. Vintage VWs are not quiet vehicles anyway.

Go for it ! Laughing

Imagine a chorus of flutes following you around wherever you drive, that's pretty close.

Depends if the slats are front to back or side to side. Side to side howls like a banshee. Front to back isn’t so bad.

More drag= less gas mileage, may effect engine cooling depending on what and how you are carrying a load.

4 flatly negative responders, yup, no rack must be the right answer. Laughing

Now re-ask all those same people if they actually have had a rack... And no, I'm not biased Wink

Yep. I have both. The side to side came on my 60 rag and it lasted all of 1/4 mile before I turned around and took it off. I have a front to back one on my 64 and will most likely take it off even though it’s quiet because I’m changing up the look.

I didn't intend to come across as flatly negative, some people like listening to wind instruments for extended periods while driving. Laughing

Yes, I had a roof rack. I actually liked having it as well since it came in handy time to time when I needed to haul something that didn't fit inside the Bug. When not needed I would pull it off and store it away. Sadly, I no longer have it as I left it hanging in my dad's garage when he passed away and I had no desire to interact anymore with the non-empathetic psycho he was married to at the time.

I’ve got 4 different racks and have bought and sold many more. I like them as a static display and for occasional use at low speeds.

I'm a roof rack fan. Yes, you can hear them, but the wood slat racks are quiet enough that it's just a windy whooshing noise

It's also a functional and handy accessory.

I've never "needed" a rack for my VW. If I'm hauling something, I take another vehicle. Maybe a question would be asking those that have them, how many times they've actually used them besides for stacking a bunch of show items on them. Cuz everyone needs a rusty tricycle or crusty cooler strapped to their roof around town.

I mount my rack only for shows, and then remove it and store it in the garage.

From experience: "great for show, but no so good on the go"

I love the look of any vintage Volkswagen with a rack on it.As for the wind sound while driving, really its a Volkswagen not the quietest car ever built.
