|
|
I tried a search on this but couldnt come up with much so here goes...
Im looking for some ideas on getting the ole web while out at my local state parks and such. I know its not much of a camping trip when you bring computers and tvs with you but I have net flix and it would be nice to just watch some stuff at night. Does anyone use like a mobile broadband device or anything like that? Just looking for a way to stay connected out in the woods. I still cant believe that the campsites would have water and power hook ups but not cable or internet.. i mean.. what year is it again? |

I have a Verizon 3G card. If there's a signal, you got the interweb. _________________ Glenn

How does that work? I was looking into it earlier but their site is being crappy. Is it like adding a line on your account? |

It's like adding a second phone. I have a PCM card, but you can get them with a USB interface. The software is a dialer that used the card... it's just like a cell phone, but data only.
All the major carrier sell the service. Speed depends on the signal, but I get out are over 5mb at home. _________________ Glenn

There are many ways to do this, most cell phone providers will cell you a USB dongle with a seperate "data only" plan. It may also be possible to "tether" your cell phone to the computer and get data that way.
In either case, you will likely find that your cell phone company will charge extra and also limit the amount of data you can download in a month (5 gigabytes is typical). I think you will find watching Netflix on demand movies will be difficult with the speeds you are likely to get, and also max out your data plan quickly.
My personal opinion? Get a smartphone for sending emails and occasional "ask the internet" type of stuff. For movies, either leave them at home and enjoy the camping or bring DVD's. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

Ahh.. curse the dvds... i have a short attention span when it comes to movies. (worked at a theatre for like 4 years) if it doesnt get my attention in the first 15 mins I usually turn it off. I just hate ordering a movie that took 2 days to get here and then not liking it just to send it off and wait for the next one. Personal issues aside I have Verizon and was thinking maybe about those hub things or a usb type card but the whole limited to 5mb thing worried me. Just seems like you could pay a monthly fee. I would be ok with that. Any one using anything like that for this reason or am I just weird? |

I have thinking about checking this out. No contract and I believe $60/month for unlimited data. Looks like decent coverage too.

Once I am camped, yes. It's handy to have the internet on the road for finding things like campgrounds, accessing The Samba if trouble strikes and maybe locating a parts store. My phone generally takes care of all that, but sometimes it's nice to have a screen and and real keyboard. _________________ 1977 Westy 2.0L FI

You can use your cell phone as a modem. Just have data on your plan. My DSL went down for a week and I added that feature... worked fine for a week. As long as you have signal you're good. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

..... that thing work on Linux? A guy at work just bought into their whole plan, but surprise, no Linux support. The store monkey had no clue. Eventually, he got a different one which works.
Nice idea, but too pricey for this guy. Now, if it could be hacked somehow..... I'm just sayin....... _________________ Sent from a white van down the street. |

I pretty much agree. I have been known to use my phone for weather and sports scores, but that's it.
What really gets me is people with DVD players in their Buses... Heck, I don't even like a stereo on while camping. _________________ '71 Westy |

it sounds like you should sell your bus & drive an rv
after all.....
the bus is from the 70's &......

stay at a rv campground, most have cable hookups & 110
that way you could leave the overcrowded public park to people
who keep warm with a fire & watch the stars _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

we use ones from Verizon and Sprint at work. They look like USB flash drives. If you can get a wireless signal they work fine. If wireless doesn't work they won't. The next stop is a satellite dish and the speed gets bad because of the lag up and back down to the satellitte.
I can see where having one on the road is good. If you have trouble you can get ahold of people's numbers. You can also look up restuarants in towns etc. I would guess you could even check on campsites before you leave one park and go to another. At work we are seeing some telecommuters who are ditching their Internet providers at home for one of these cards. Yes - a mobile phone with Internet will do about the same but the screen is much smaller. Imagine telecomuteing from Yosemite or Yellowstone for a week - hey as long as you do your work does it matter if a buffalo is standing 100 feet from you? _________________ George Carlin:
