If one were to start the hunt for a barn find back yard weed overgrown craigslist deal..... what are the easiest ways to determine if its a syncro or not based on year, exterior look, and other easy ways to ask the yokel that doesnt know what hes got via the phone or email before making a possible long journey to look at it in person.

My dream machine would be a vanagon sycro camper /w Tdi engine and a full restore. So im looking for something I can haul home cheap and rebuild.

Ask where the gas filler is.
On the rear quarter panel it's a Syncro. behind the front wheel, it's a 2wd.

Read up on the stickies, lot's of information there. Also Syncro.org
And yeah, good luck finding a Syncro these days that the owner doesn't know what they have.

With that attitude I'm sure you'll find yourself a great deal.

Why don't you ask them if their van is a 4WD instead of trying to rip them off. You don't want to buy one of these from someone who doesn't know what he's got. Be polite to the yokels.

While Im at it. On this forum the etiquette is to use the search before posting a new thread on a topic that may have already been covered.

Good luck.

If the preson doing the shopping doesn't know the obvious clue (gas filler location) he shouldn't be so disparaging toward the person who may be doing the selling.

That said, forum member "Blueconundrum" may have a tin top Syncro for sale that fits your needs in that it could maybe be had for cheap.

I agree with the others in that I wouldn't count on finding a Syncro for sale by someone who doesn't know what it's worth. That goes quadrupple for a Syncro Westy.

Ive found many cars that are worth a lot more than they should be in my area... we have some dummies around here.

People still find rare cars in "barn" finds everyday so I dont think its too far fetched. But thanks for the fuel door info.

im not an expert on them but if I found one I would quickly become one.

First off Welcome to the Samba!!

You are right there is still a chance of finding one for a good price, it is a slim chance though.

You will be competing with the rest of us that are looking every day!

I know of 4 that have been found for $1500 or less in the last 2 years.

Be careful with this statement,

Would your area include the Samba Classifieds? I have seen some crazy high prices for Bays and Vanagons, that appear ready for the junk yard as scrap listed around $4000 and more. Doesn't mean they aren't getting that much.
