Thanks Glen; Sometimes, mostly when cold, very difficult to get in reverse. After finally getting it in,it thumps into gear. Then difficult to get in other gears. Not sure if its servo or possible clutch adjustment,or something else. I have forgotten the mesurment for adjusting clutch. That happens when you get old like me. Thanks for any help you can give,William _________________ Mary Jane Muggles Lives! |

It could be a lot of things from simple to not so simple. It could be a vac line that is incorrectly hooked up or leaking or it could be an adjustment. It could also be a leaky diaphram for the servo.
When you say it happens cold - when you first start the car and then the problem disappears after warm up?
Hydraulic lines properly connected, fluids are at the right level? _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Hi; The problem doesn't disappear, but it gets a little better. All lines and fluids are correct as my wife has had this car for 3 years and the problem has just started recently. I am leaning towards a leaking servo right now. Looking for servo or rebuilding kit. Don't know if the kits are still available. Thanks for every ones help...William _________________ Mary Jane Muggles Lives! |

Hiya exv,
The fact that it is hard to get into Reverse AND subsequently difficult to find forward ranges almost certainly points to a clutch adjustment problem OR as Nova notes, a possible problem with the clutch servo diaphragm. It MAY be that there are other problems (like a collapsing vacuum hose - which can be easily checked out), but these would be most suspect in your situation.
However, the fact that when you do find Reverse you get a "thump" as the tranny shifts in is troublesome. Not that it's a big serious issue (actually pretty easy to fix) but it (and your situation above) does indicate that this car has had less than adequate maintenance. Consquently, it would be a good idea for you go through the car with a fine tooth comb (be especially aware of brakes and fuel supply) looking for maintenance needs.
As Bruce has already suggested, you need to point your browser at the Volkswagen Automatic Register www.vwar.org a website focused on the care and feeding of the AutoStick. It's a site which should be bookmarked by any AutoStick driver. All your needs can be taken care of there. _________________ Mike

Thanks for your reply; This car has been very well maintaned,as I am a retired air cooled mechanic for 35 years. Some times things just go bad,as my servo is 39 years old. You know the old saying? Shit happens. Thanks anyway for your reply. William _________________ Mary Jane Muggles Lives! |

Hi Mid America had a listing for the rebuild kits. There was talk about the factory that makes them burning creating a shortage, but unkown if true. Is't it great that a car that is 30 some years old can have a part last as long as that. Lets see a new car do that. Good luck. Rob |
