|
|
Looking for ideas for reverse lights/light on my 59. I almost backed into a car due to a light in front of me reflecting on my rear window(singlecab), so I couldn't see shit. I had 2 crappy square ones hidden under my rear bumper before, but they were only on there for a short time due to a speed bump smashing them into a billion pieces It was funny I have to say cause they didn't really help much being under the bumper and they were just stupid looking, so now I'm thinking of putting a(1) clear foglight back there on top of the bumper & am wondering if anyone has done this & how it worked out visually or if there are any other ideas out there?? _________________ Hoockd on fonicks werkt for mee?

I was thinking about doing this soon.
I just want a simple round light mounted on the overrider that I can also swivel around and/or detach for an engine bay light.
I'll have it switched on the dash. _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.

I've been thinking about this for a while, and just adding them to the bumper with custom brackets so they'd bolt on on a '67 Beetle. Never really got around to doing it, though. _________________ -Andrew |

It's a '67ish bug reverse light tucked in betwen the bumper and left bumper tube.
I wired it with a connector so I could unplug the wire for when I have to pull the bumper off. The light is aimed slightly to the left.
The bracket is a 67ish bug bracket 'massaged' into shape, bolted to the bumper at an existing bolt, no holes drilled in bus or bumper. I used a 67 nose cone.
After I hooked up the reverse light, people were often courteous about waiting for me to back out of a parking space. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

I've had that same set up before on my old bus in Puerto Rico. Yes, they are great for backing up at night but I used it more while driving on the island since there were plenty of corksuckers there driving with their high beams on! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

A friend of mine did a similar setup, but with 2 '67 backup lights - 1 on each side...I finally scored 1 myself, and am waiting to find another before copying that setup... _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

This one is hooked up with the speedo cable switch. The one on my '65 ( in the same spot) has the switch on the nosecone. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

When I got my SC it had exactly the set up you described. A rather large, round light on the left side of the rear bumper, with a pull switch mounted under the dash behind the speedo (pull a switch similar to the light switch toward the floor to turn it on). Problem with that set up is the the rear gate smacked it when it was down. I bought a pair of beetle lights I plan on putting between the overrider and the bumper, like on Clara's photo. I thought about getting one of those speedo switches (I've seen them here and on ebay numerous times) but I decided I'd rather have it on a switch so I can use it as a bright light response, as mentioned previously, or for tail-gaters. My plan also includes a self fabricated clamp type mount so I don't have to drill a hole in the bumper. Not that it would hurt my current bumper at all, but for one day when I get a real bumper _________________ '67 Micro Bus

Didn't think about the rear gate thing....but I still want to be able to multi-purpose it. Engine bay, tailgaters, and generally confusing people... _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.

He's my two cents. I put a pair of stock 68 back up lights in my 63 bus. Cut the body above the tail lights and installed like stock. They hook up to the trans and worked great, but still couldn't see as well as I would like when backing up. SO I installed a off-road light on the rear roof of my camper. Sure lite things up behind me, could see great and would back off tail gaters, but it was too bright for loading or un-loading a trailer or the bus when camping. SO I installed a 8 foot stainless steel buggy whip on the bumper with a single 12v light bulb mounted on top. This was perfect for camping, loading the bus or tailer at night. It lite up a very large area around the bus with out blinding you and in a pinch I could bend it down to lite up inside the engine compartment. _________________ Prosit!

This is perfect. I'll be doing this to our 65 the next time we pull the trans. |

Ok, I have a nose cone without switch
Don't want to install an in-line speedo switch because people say they don't work fast, correct me please.
Is there any way of fitting a universal switch under the shift stick?
thanks

I think you should just hook them to a toggle switch on your dash. I mean, it would be nice to have them work exactly when you shift to reverse, but they arent necessary when the sun is out. So if you dont have the nosecone, and dont want to use the cable drive.... use a switch.
I had planned on building a bracket setup to weld onto the shiftrod and frame of a bus for a friend, so he could have reverse lights...but the bus was sold.
Have fun either way xavi, show us your setup when its done. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

| I would think a tab attached to the shift rod with a normally open button that is bumped could be used somehow as the rod only swings that far during reverse Make the tab as wide as the slide motion so it can contact all during the slide. |

VW in the 1950s and early 1960s sold kits with that setup.
Personally we prefer to just find a parking spot that can be driven through into the next so backing out is not required. Failing that, backing into the parking spot and being able to just drive forward out is a lot safer. Kind of obvious to other drivers that your moving around when you are backing into a parking spot.
Before doing this as a norm, had three minor fender benders with the panel camper when backing sloowly back out of parking spots with turn signal on and looking back and forth at both exterior mirrors.
Here is a simular backup light (with images of the tab kit) forum on the K. Ghia side:
