Hi all,

I'm fairly new to Thesamba.com, but I recently bought a '72 hardtop camper as the title might imply. I will be restoring it over the winter with my grandfather, who has some experience restoring 60's chevy novas. She does have some rust, but mostly just needs some serious cleaning and repainting in some areas, as well as a new heating system. Our plan is simple, work front to back fixing everything we find along the way. Here are some pics of her as of now, and I will post as we progress.

What kinda carbs are those? How does it run?

Looks like a PO found a deal on a 68-71 Westy interior and put it in your bus.

again welcome to the club!

It's got dual weber carbs, sorry I can't be more specific. It runs very well, it takes about 90-120 seconds to idle starting cold though, but other than that, great!

Our first work session my Grandfather and I did mostly prep-work, such as removing the windshield to expose some nasty rust, and completely gutting the interior.

and lastly the rusted away heating pipe.

The next day, we chopped out all the nasty below windshield rust,

We ground away all the rust we could find, and then did the best we could to fit the replacement pieces that we got from bus depot. http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=AHS29 We did not weld them in yet as we want to cut a few bits of metal to fit the spots that the replacement pieces won't cover, as well as POR -15 it all! I will have pics of this process soon.

Is that a deluxe bus, with a camper interior? do you have a walk through up front or is it a bench seat?

I can see where benchs would have been, it looks like someone put a camping intirior in your bus and took the seats out. its what im doing to my 72 actually Very Happy

Ps: righteous set up for working on the bus.

For clarification, what exactly is my bus? It doesn't really matter to me, westfaka or westfalia, I love it the same. But I would just like to know.

Yup! My grandfather has quite the set up for his Chevy's! I'm really lucky he is helping me out me out so much. I'm pretty sure that his garage is bigger than his house, haha.

Check the chassis number on the dash, also at left rear of the engine compartment. If the 2nd number is a 2, it means it was a camper, 3 means it was a transporter. ... so it starts either '222...' or '232...' (3rd number is the year digit.)

You want the painted plate behind the drivers seat for the decored and all it's magic.

BTW Nathan, 2x2 is a stationwagon, 2x3 is a Kombi that could have been modified by Westfalia.

hmm, I've never been clear on the difference between a kombi and a station wagon. Confused

I found this to confuse me more:
Kombi
is a German abbreviation of "Kombinationswagen" (Combination Car) and it is German name for station wagon. Since Germany is a major producer of cars for many European countries, the term Kombi in this meaning is also used in Swedish, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Hungarian, Spanish, Portuguese, Bulgarian. In Afrikaans and in Australia, Kombi is also used to refer to a Volkswagen Microbus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_body_style

So you're saying there are non campers that start with "22..."?

I know my Riviera Camper has a "23...." but that's something else as it was a passenger bus or transporter

- actually they're all transporters I think as far as like an insurance company goes. ... and the Bentley says on the cover only "Staion Wagon/ bus".

And what the heck is a samba? Laughing

21 is a panelvan, 22 is a fully dressed passenger bus, 23 is a cargovan with windows that may have had optional seats or camping gear, 24 etc....
