This is just getting thrown out there for those who may be interested. I've found an 81' Westy at a local low end dealer. The vehicle is mostly intact, I know the back window is busted out. I don't know anything about it's mechanical condition but assume it does not run. Anyway to the point the dealer is selling a whole section of cars in this condition for $200 each and the westy (only VW) is in that section. Apparently he's waiting on some guys from Mexico to come and get them (a few at a time) but will take the first $200 that comes. He said he has no set deal. I don't think this guy would be willing to do any shipping. He just want's them gone, so cash and go if you know what I mean. If anyone has more interest I am willing to get some more info. There are no finders fees, just keeping with the spirit of this community.

It's gotta have $200.00 worth of parts at the very least.

This is my wife's greatest fear; that I'd buy these to save them, then end up with several of them around the house.

Hey TENCENTLIFE, isn't this in your neck of the woods?

Every time I see one of those great deals....

I recall the Peoples Republic of Fresno and King Alan Autry's trolls known as

CODE ENFORCEMENT

I've been raided by the feds---by Connie Chung---but Code Nazi's made them look like 3rd graders... (I take that back, 2nd graders---I did my student teaching in 76 in the 3rd grade---I know standards)

Red Neck Code Nazi's have a dildo for VW's and specifically Older Westies

I don't have that problem. I could have a tire-dump on my property, and the county couldn't do anything about it. Homeowners Association? There will never be one unless I draw up the papers, and someday I will because we need to pool to keep up our road, all 6 of us.

But, I'm not that keen on having junk cars around. I have three vehicles and they all start and run just fine. That has to be a New Mexican first!

I like that Jeff Foxworthy joke: "If your home is mobile, but the seven cars in your yard are not...you might be a redneck."

Anyway, JYD is a lot closer to Alamogordo than I am. The only way I would get an aircooled van is if I had a nice flat-6 Porsche motor looking for a home. Otherwise, I've been done with VW aircooleds for many years now, with no intention of going back.

you do not know how luck you are not to live in a municipality ruled by
little men with little balls and little peckers trying to act like men

Monterey is worse.....there you got loony libs with little balls....etc etc

Coats at least is owned by the family and has been since 1889---so the rule of law depends on our whim

Oh, I know how lucky. That's why I won't live in one of those places. Nuts.

Does it have any rust on it? Is it the deluxe version with the fridge and stove, or does it just have a sink and icebox?

Thanks,
Taylor

I don't think it has any rust worth mentioning. The back window is busted out. The rubber seals are dried up. The interior is good in most areas but near the back the cabinet is warped from weather exposure. all cabinets are wood sim. The pop top looks to be ok, from the inside the tent looks good. This van has the gas stove and fridge, sink, one table attached to the cabinets near the rear seat and the swing out table mout is in place on the drivers wheel hump. I didn't see the top for it. The headliner in the front is falling but it looks like it was covered over and the over cover is whats comming down. The engine I assume is a 2lt, it is carburated, and an auto tranny. Thats about all I can say right now. I only stopped for a minute to look at it. IMO this is a possible fixer upper, if not it surely has $200 worth of parts. If I get a chance I'll try to get a few pics, no promises.

It is still there, anyone with interest in this van let me know and I can tell you how to contact the dealer.

Is the camper gear (fridge, stove etc.) worth $200 alone?

If they work (sink pump/fridge) then I'd say a definate yes. The propane tank, cabinets, engine, transaxle, the list goes on with parts alone.

Yes, I too live in a homeowners community, although they are not of the "small privates" type of inforcers.

I did get looks from the neighbors when I first brought home my military 181, even though it's tucked neatly in the garage (it now has a complete restoration under it's belt, and gets pulled out for parades and such). The vanagon Westy gets alot of neighbors coming over to get a look see. These things attract stories about how they used to own one, or camped in one, etc.

I wish I had the room for that air cooled.
