Slowly making way on the punch list for my money pit I bought earlier this year (87 syncro). I drove 3 hours to get it and on the way back when it got dark I turned on the headlights. Later threw on the high beams still no problem. Had to turn, flipped turn signal, no headlights. I turned them off and back on still nothin. I pulled the turn signal to activate high beam and noticed they would come on but not stay on. So I drove three hours holding the switch back (can't believe i went without tools, last time I believe "van runs great, a few little things here and there").

Anyway, my guess is the t/s switch assy is probably bad but does anyone have any other ideas? Seems like it shouldn't permanently affect the headlights. If the headlights won't come on does that mean it probably blew a fuse?

Thanks in advance

Multimeter and a check of the wiring and fuse box is probably in order. Just make sure the PO didn't do something stupid/bizarre with the wiring.

You wouldn't believe the crap I found on my 82. The underside was a rat's nest of wiring, virtually all of which was aftermarket, dead and needless. Did find out I had an alarm though. Too bad it was rotten. Glad the kill switch didn't work.

Best,

Lanval

Bad contacts in the steering wiring harness.

Hi/Low should have a "click" to ingage. Remove plastic covers and look for spills ( beer, coffee, imagination run free). If play and ingagement aren't there, clean contacts ( pull all connections, 3 male pin conections and douche).

There is a short, Find it,.

I didn't mention it but the previous owner did in fact butcher a few things under the dash. I'm going to take it all out when I fix this problem. My hope was this was something that happened to someone else and I could fix it without looking at that big mess. It amazes me how much cutting and wire someone can use to install fog lights.

When I bought it the guy proudly showed me the bentley manual he had. I should of known it was a bad sign. The only bright spot is he purchased quite a few new parts while trying to fix it. It has all new shifter parts from the cab back but it still takes mashing around for 30 seconds to find a gear. When I get it all adjusted right it should be real nice.

This must have something to do with the aforementioned foglight install. There went straightforward. Oh well I can probably undo what he did put it back to stock and move on.

Y'all were supposed to say something like "this happened to me when someone put the wrong fuse in.....etc."

Thanks---gettin up early tomorrow now
