Five, maybe six, years ago I was on the last leg of a trip I took to Columbus Ohio. I was on my way home to my folks house. Driving my 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle I had finally come within 5 miles of my destination when I watched, in what seemed like slow motion, a 73 year old lady in a blue Chevy Camaro pull out in front of me. Doing a good 55 or 60mph, there was no way I could have stopped in time. I slammed on my brakes which had been upgraded to Disc all the way around just for such an occasion. My little black and green 1303 plowed into the rear passenger side of her car spinning her 180 degrees and crushing the front end of my car. In the wake of the accident I was awarded enough money to purchase my now 1971 Super Beetle and I had a great idea to create a BBQ grill out of the totaled mess of my 73'. Now, lets say 6 years later, my father is bringing my idea to life and here is the beginning of the transformation.

We are planning a charcoal grill in the engine compartment and possibly a gas rotisserie inside the passenger compartment. It will have wheels and a hitch so that it can be towed. We are also thinking of taking it to car shows and events to serve hot dogs and hamburgers. My only regret is that I cannot be there to help in the creation of this one of a kind Volkswagen Super Beetle BBQ grill.

On the show, didn't the BBQ Beetle come loose from the hitch and slam into the curb?

angle iron was used as brackets for the grill surface to sit on.

Here it is with the removable rear apron and a couple of galvanized fence posts cut down and bolted in place to look like exaust. It will also serve as a mounting surface for the charcoal pan.

and with the decklid

An old gas tank was cut in half and used as the charcoal pan. A couple of strong magnets hold the pan in place.

There is still a lot of work to be done... We plan on installing a Smoker in the passanger compartment.

At a show a few years ago, someone had removed the interior of a Ghia and lined it w/ galvanized sheet metal. Add ice=instant cooler.
You could do that with the front end, and have the ultimate party vehicle.
Cold drinks out the front, smoked or grilled meats out the back! Drool

20 years ago a friend of mine had a single cab truck that he pushed into a hole in the ground and back filled around it. Bed level was ground level. He built a rotisserie on the bed and used it for years. Built large wood fires on the bed and roasted many pigs, goats, and a side of beef a couple times. He gutted the cab and installed racks and would shovel coals inside and did tons of dogs, chicken, salmon and oysters. He also had an ice machine and would fill an old vert with ice to keep the beer cold. He had some great parties.

Many years ago at a CCVU club BBQ in central Cal, the owner of the house had a bus frame section that covered his fire pit. All he did was add wire mesh over the frame section and start grillin.
On my Weber bbq, I lost the catch pan for the ashes and I used one of my junk 65 and earlier hub caps.

Starting my BugBQ project.

Looking for advice and suggestions and other lessons people have learned in doing this type of project.

I have already designed, mounted and tested my retractable tow bar
and it works great.

The chariot is currently at the sandblaster so when it is finished, I will start welding the internal BBQ frame as well as installing the umbrella assembly.

I am currently planning on adding a cooling tub in the rear engine compartment as well as an inverter to drive the music system and lighting for cooking at night.

I plan on wiring the taillights to work as the marker lights while towing.

Please help and send me your ideas.

Tom

All,

I am in Northern California and attempting to create a functional, highly efficient BugBQ.

I found an amazing carcass at Pick and Pull of a 1973 Super Beetle Convertible.

I am looking for the perfect BBQ to install within so anyone with suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Currently it is getting
sand and Bead blasted so after this is completed, I will be under coating and starting on welding up the inner skeleton.

I plan on adding a power inverter inside of it as well as attachments for different size umbrellas and speakers.

The final color will be a two tone, white on red.

I am also looking for a tow ball for the rear of my 1968 Convertible to tow this BugBQ around.

I hope to have it ready for the Bug event in Northern California later this summer.

Any thoughts or lessons that I have not realized yet I would appreciate a shout out.

Tom
