What can I do to protect my mufflers? They have a light surface rust and I would like to kill it before it grows. I've been told BBQ paint would work, but I want to know what you all have done.
Do I need to remove the rust first and then paint, or is there a paint/inhibitor that can be used in one step? |

I have a nice ceramic coating on my Thing exhaust, but my '85 Westy is of the old rusty variety.
I use wood stove paint on it. Comes in spray cans, goes on easy, and will easily sustain temps up to 700F. Goes on flat black, so it looks pretty nice too.
You can get it most anywhere fireplace or wood stoves are sold. Probably the usual suspects, too, like Lowe or Home Depot. |

You can get High Heat primer and engine paint rated at 1200 deg. from Dupli-Color. It contains Ceramic and is available in colors as engine paint. I use the grey primer and silver paint for mufflers. I get Dupli-Color from Pep Boys auto parts locally. Get as much rust off as possible before priming. Personally I sand blast to bare metal. Hand sanding is better than nothing. _________________ Ya can't have too many Vdubs!

The best coating now is ceramic after sand plasting. This needs to be applied by someone that works with power coating. The silver finish can be polished or brushed look. Other colors are available, black, factory gray. The kicker is normal cost runs $150-200. |

My '73 has ceramic mufflers thru the bumper of original design. After less than 2 years of minimal driving, these $380.00 mufflers are beginning to rust. Go figure. _________________ Ya can't have too many Vdubs!

A coating on a surface that is in the weather & gets heated a cooled (real quick with water) does not last long. Stainless is the way to go.

You get used to rusty exhaust. Mine has a bunch of holes... it make me think I have a 454ci V8 in my Thing when I rev the engine.
Someday when I'm rich I'll replace it. _________________ '73 Thing

There is a long list fo options:
POR-15 exhaust paint
Rattle can exhaust paint
Ceramic coating
High dollar stainless steel exhaust system.
POR-15 has my vote... Everythng peels and rusts.
Pick a product that you can reapply as a touch-up process for low $$$ every 3-6 months |

I've spent some time researching POR-20 and have yet to come across a positive review. Here's a recent thread:

If you can't figure out what to use and want to buy time, one product that we used to use on headers and megaphones while trying to experiment with different sizes, etc., etc, was a rattle can of dry graphite spray. It sprays out a very dark gray, almost black and is not effected by the heat. The good thing is that after a rainy race season etc. or months later, you can just touch it up and it looks fine. If you want to remove it to do whatever, contact cleaner takes it right off. I don't ever remember it "flaking" or "peeling". The stuff is available at most industrial supply places |

I used por 15 black velvet, rolled it on the muffler with a small paint roller and brushed the tubes...so far its doing ok except 2 or 3 hot spots that are turning white. Only been on the exhaust 1 year and I don't drive the 181 everyday.

I've been running a Jet-Hot coating for about five years, no rust yet.

BBQ paint X2
Hit it with a wire brush first
Then keep after it every so often, I spray the problem areas while I'm waiting for the oil to finish dripping during oil changes.
Works good
