I read a bit on this on here, but was wondering how many have popped for this upgrade?
Has the price come down at all yet ? I don't even see them on the GW web site? _________________ 1990 Vanagon

I went and got one, couldn't resist. It does work well, accelerates smoother and the throttle response is a tad crisper. It has one failing, on startup when it is cold outside it runs rich, real rich. Goes away in about a minute as the engine heats up.
Is it worth it? Well it does do as they claim, but is it worth $700? Well do you pay $100 for a bottle of wine at a restaurant? Then it might be ok for you. If your AFM is clattering hunk of junk and cannot find a decent one, then it might be a good thing. If I where to have $700 and a good AFM I might not be so inclined to do it again.
The motor does run smoother, that there is no doubt, and it does have better acceleration, but the Syncro is no Range Rover and never will be. It is a tiny improvement over the stock AFM. I think the lads at GoWesty did an admirable job making this. It is a lot of work to make one and hot wire AFM's on their own are rather pricey. Add in a computer to make the output signal of Hot Wire simulate the resistance output of the AFM. You have made an interesting product for a small price.

GoWesty also has one for the stock 2.1.
It functions as DogPilot describes.
Is it worth it? To me, Yes.
New electronics is good.
The wife even noticed the difference in the way the engine ran.
Its not on the GW website, you have to call and inquire.
Taylor at GW was most helpful - my hat goes off to him. _________________ Matt

Modern electronics are a plus in my book. The flapper boxes seem a bit crude compared to hot wire designs.
The conversion for a Porsche 911 is around 1800.00 and they can have drivability issues from what I have heard.
I guess the GW unit is much cheaper than the Porsche kits.
It will remain high on my wish list for now i guess. Maybe GW will do a group buy or a sale some day.
Thanks for the advice... _________________ 1990 Vanagon

After driving from south Florida to Central Oregon with a bad AMS (suffering the hick-ups the entire way) the price tag for the Hot Wire AMF was a bargain... especially knowing I'd never need to touch it again. _________________ 91 Westy |
