So, after 3 years I finally got my 62 back on the road. I took it down due to the carbs never being synced up 100% after dealing with the guy that built the motor I had to send him 300.00 and he sent me another set of carbs that never worked so I bought a set of knock off HPMX's from Ebay and the car runs. I still need to work out some linkage issues. I am thinking about the needle bearing over bushing replacement and I think I will purchase the longer connecting rods to the carbs and Offset accordingly to get a more direct applied force on each side. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Next, I would like to get the remote start for this car however, with an electric fuel pump I would need to put a relay in parallel with the 12v to the control side of the starter circuit. Has anyone done this and does this sound accurate? |

What kind of car do you have?
I’m not an expert with remote start at all. But with a carbureted engine, generally you need to pump the gas pedal once to activate the choke. And often you need to push the pedal down a bit on a warm startup. Do you have a plan to overcome this?
Also, is there a specific reason you want a remote start? The owners manual suggests you drive off immediately after startup vs letting it idle to warm up.
I’m not necessarily trying to talk you out of it. Just curious. |

I have a 62 Beetle running a 2180 with FF trans. Narrowed 4" beam Dropped Spindles and Offset Spring plates. It's a solid car. I just like the idea of having it start up before I get to it. The remote start would just be a cool addition to an Old Skool bug. Thinking on this I know I would have to energize the Electric fuel pump or it's not going to stay running if it even starts at all. It probably would for just a few seconds or as long as it will with whatever fuel is in the float bowl. So a dual action momentary contact running through a relay for the fuel pump is necessary then, once the key is turned it could drop out the relay and get its power straight form the output and function normally. |

IMO it’ll never start. Remote Start requires fuel injection and all the “brains” that go along with it.
Hopefully you’ll never try to start it remotely while in gear. _________________ Volkswagen!

^^^This right here!^^^
Plus the fact that you have carbs without any cold start capability what-so-ever on their own. As long as you have those you will have to personally babysit each and every start up and what the engine wants will change with the weather.
The #1 purpose of remote start is to warm up the car and clear the frost/ice off the windshield before you leave the house to go to work in the morning. In Texas I highly doubt you have frost more than once or twice a year. I also highly doubt you have an operational heating system left in that car, most have been disconnected, blocked off and thrown away by now.
I am at a loss to understand what you would gain by having one up against the challenge and expense of overcoming the obstacles of making one work safely in that old of a car. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old!

Have one of the kids warm up the car... or get an EFI system. _________________ Glenn

All good points, thanks for the thoughts and advice. I am. Licsensed Electrician specializing in Controls. I know this is doable and it doesn't have to have an electronic fuel injection system to make this work. It does have to be parked in neutral. If the carburetors are tuned correctly there is no reason this wouldn't work the same as turning the ignition. I'll work ot out and let you all know how I did it and whether it's not worth the effort or something different that easily achievable by anyone with a basic understanding of control circuitry. |

the choke settings and neutral safety would be the items I think would be the problem with remote start. I will keep my opinion about remote start on an air cooled vw to myself I just don't understand at all what an electric fuel pump has to do with anything for the remote starting...
but I think I know what you are asking, and if your fuel pump is tied into the ignition source with no safety, you also are looking for a fire hazzard. there is a simple device to install in any electronic fuel pump install that should take care of your concerns.
