Recently ordered an intermittent wiper relay from Busdepot[111955531]. Looks like a flasher relay, but I,m not sure where to install it. Are these adaptable to the electrical system of a bay window?
EDIT: some pix of the relay.

Search intermittant or interval with Naskeet as the submitter............if you dare _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

| ok u have the right relay. but it didn't come in many busses at all. i have a 78 champagne edition with intermittent wipers that i was trying to adapt to my 79 westy. it has that relay on the bottom of the fuse box where the other relays are. should be a blank spot or 2 there for yours to pop right in. the top pic is the wiring harness that goes from the bottom of the wiper switch(steerin column) to the wiper motor(white plug) the other wires which are not on a stock bus (5 of them?) go to this relay in the fuse box. Only problem is you will need the wiper switch from a bus that had intermitent cause the internal contacts are different and to activate the intermittent part u pull the switch towards yourself one click. |

| i probably confused you more than u were before. just wanted to show you how the factory did it in the late 70s. im sure there are many other ways and options to do this. |

Don't you need a 4 position switch as found in the champagne buses, not just the off, low, high switch everyone else has? _________________ James

Most 75+ switches are already 4 position, there's a small tab of plastic on the outer column housing that stops it from going past off to the delay position. You still have to add a wire to the harness that plugs into it though. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Is the wiring proper on a 78 to use the relay or does it require additional wiring? I'll take a peek in the morning, but any advice is appreciated. _________________

I don't know how this particular intermittent relay hooks up, but last year I installed an older style after market intermittent relay switch on my '78 - and it was dead simple. 4 wires to hook up, only two into the stock harness, right under the steering column - no need to mess with the connector at the wiper motor. I'll post pics later - including the early '80's style Canadian Tire packaging. _________________ Darryl

The wiring for it won't be there unless your bus is a champagne or some Euro delivered special model. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

After a daring slog through several documents. Faced with a daunting task of digesting: dialogue, discussion, and diatribe. I finally struck some samba gold ...... the solution

So this intermittent setup works ONLY if you have a wiper switch with the two rows of contacts? (CE?) I just wondered if there was a way to do this with a stock bus switch.
If it can't work then I will look into switching around the switch parts with some 914 stuff as they look the same except for the stalk that is longer. Swapping the stalk looks possible and then I could have a switch that has the intermittent wiring and contacts. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

I remember back in the 70's when I found out about that in the rabbits I did the delay mod in alot of those back then. _________________ where its cold and snowy |

Got that and since there isn't an extra contact inside that is why I was looking at my stash of 914 wiper switches. Some have the extra contact as 914's did have a "Flick wipe" or "intermittent" wiper setup. The switch body is the same just a different stalk. Guess I'll pull out the switches to see how easy it is to swap in. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

Ok, here is a pic of a late bay wiper switch and a late 914 switch. The bodies are the same, everything is the same except for the stalk which can be swapped in. The 914 one is on the right.
I'll give it a try..

dug out a 914 74 switch and a 75 wiper switch with the extra contacts for electric washer pump. Note both have the extra position contact for a intermittent relay. I'll swap over the stalk from a bus switch and see how it works. Dunno if I have two 75 switches so I can use that one and also have electric washer too.
