Church key summary:
Excluding possible Barndoor differences and replacement/aftermarket keys, I think there are only 3 church keys:
T - bare finish
P - Grey finish
P - Chrome (Deluxe Buses)
T style in on the left not sure if the longer one was ever "correct":
P-style:
Barndoor style (used until 1953?):

Original post:
Why two or more church keys? Is one early and the other late? Just something I`ve been think about. And was there a small one for the gas door?

The little gas door ones were being sold by gabriel awhile back & let me tell you it's great to have it on my keyring. I always forgot to grab my church key when putting gas in. Here'a a pic of it an a link to the ad it's from. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=519042

Does anyone have any close up pics of the lock cover for the engine decklid?
Also , was this just a cover and the church key went into the square drive on the decklid door latch , or is it like the gas cap door where there is a cylinder with it's own square drive ? _________________ If you don't like the way I drive , stay off the sidewalk .

It's just a cover, although it is spring loaded like the gas door cover. _________________ How to Post Photos

I used to have a miniature version of the original style. I can't remember if it was a T or a P. _________________ DKB |

The T-handle church keys go in the pocket. |

I have a mini T handle, but it's still to big for the keyring. My mini gas door key has held up pretty good for the last year or so sofar

I think door pockets went missing in April 61.

Obus, I know exactly where your talking about, the first time I tried using this one I have it tweeked alittle, so I played around with my door & lock until it would open & close snugly without bending the key. I gave one to a buddy & he did the same thing as you, but went farther. It was pretty funny cause he was excited about it when I gave it to him & he went over to try it & the VW part came rite off the square part, key was in 2 pieces & the look on his face was so funny when it happened SO I souldn't say it's a quality key, just convenient _________________ Hoockd on fonicks werkt for mee?

I saw og pockets on a April 6th 1961 bus... it was the basalt interior. With the condition of that interior I am sure they are original to the bus. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Way back, I ordered a repro T-handle for my '67 deluxe. It was too big for the lock. I ordered another from another vendor. It was too small and spun in the lock. I finally found a P-handle and it was just right. _________________ Judy
