Hi. I have been trying to put together this 84 1.9 manual. It has 4 gear. I am able to put her in 1st, 3rd and reverse. I have overhauled the shift base, replaced the worn tabs on the ears with the gowesty stuff that you epoxy it etc. The rubber billows, the lever replaced and since i have the other gears, i suspect the linkage problem. How should i approach to this issue? Thanks.
AS OF 04-01-18 THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED. thanks

It is linkage, you may have attached linkage at the rear to wrong side of transmission. It goes on the more front mounting point. If you watch the cup as a friend shifts, you’ll see it can’t move all the way. _________________ ________________________________________

Sounds like the throw is a bit out of adjustment. Can you engage those gears (at the transmsision) with the shift linkage disconnected? _________________ 86 syncro CHC, NorthWesty subbie 2.5, decoupler, locker, custom interior, 225/75r16 Duratrack's on CLK's, Toyo cabin heater, ARB fridge, 300w Zamp Solar, Gowesty bumpers/skid/rails, Fiama awning

Here is the usual cause. At the transmission, the bushing plate is bolted to the wrong side of the 2 bolt ears on the side of the tranny. This makes it so a curved part of the long shift rod tries to go through the bushing when you are trying for 2 and 4 and it won't go all the way.

You are probably right cause i remember when i was trying to put everything back together, there was a part, a metal piece that shift rod is going through and this part was needed to bolt on somewhere on the transmission. I scratched my head trying to figure out which way it should go.

That video shows it installed on the wrong side of the 2 tranny bolt hole ears. The plate needs to be on the side closest to the front of the van.

How did you make out? I’m assuming the linkage was bolted to the wrong side like mentioned above. I hope you’ve fixed the problem. If not, sometimes just having the shifter base out of alignment is enough (especially if coupled with the spline joint being out of alignment also) to cause the linkage to not be able to find second gear and reverse. Ask me how I know. There are plenty of articles and videos on how to properly tweak the system from the shifter all the way back to the shift lever on the transmission and especially the spline joint. Also, make sure your stick shift is properly set in the shift box before tightening the spline joint. I may be wrong but I think in an 84 the shifter needs to be set to 19mm from the passenger side of the shift box and half way from front to back while shift lever at the transmission is in neutral (straight up and down.) I don’t have my Bentley but someone else could correct me if I’m wrong or confirm that measurement if needed. Hopefully you are busy motoring down the road already. Good luck. |

I wish. Day started with an outing to the local breakfast joint and ended up in a mall:) Happy wife but no progress on the project. Beside this little issue, bunch other needs to be adressed. Bought her here on samba last year and towed from TX to NY. Entire fuel, ignition system, radiator etc. replaced. Body work started, paint job will follow. I don't think i ll be on the road anytime soon. |

Hi. I have removed the rod yesterday. comparing it to few other illustrations, it appears that i have installed the cups that holds the bushing on the wrong side. I think they should have installed on the other side.
Also, how is the position of the bend looks? Is the hump supposed to be horizontal like this? Thanks |
