Recently I "upgraded" my 1641 single relief engine. I added Empt oil pump, oil filter, 1 1/2 sump, oil filter and new Empi power pulley. Motor runs great! i.e.: no oil or vapor leaks......However when I turns off engine about a teaspoon of oil "squirts" out of pulley? That's it! leak stops... I know air cooled like to mark their territory......and a teaspoon isn't that much.......but everytime I turn off motor???......added: my new oil capacity (with filter, cooler, sump, and 10' of hoses) is now 7 quarts. Any advise or solutions? thanks much |

The pulley has a reverse screw ridge that pushes any oil back into the engine. I have found that many aftermarket pulleys have a low ridge that does not generate enough air movement to push the oil back into the case. I went through 3 different aftermarket pulleys until I found one that does not allow oil to escape behind the pulley.
Wow, 7 quarts. My external filter/deep sump has 5 1/4 quarts and it takes for ever to warm up, I started putting in only 4 quarts as that allowed a more normal warm up. Cold oil does not allow contaminates from blow-by to evaporate and they sit in your oil longer which ruins it. |

I don't doubt it. I have never had any trouble with the steel 3.5lb pulley offered by many vendors. GBE calls this the Achiever pulley. Another thing to try is to get a pulley cut for sand seal and and use a push-in sand seal. I wouldn't do this with a cheap aluminum pulley, though.
Is it possible you have blow-by? _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

Take pulley off and measure case hole, it should be 50mm.
Sometimes it's been cut to 50.5 or 51mm.
If it's any of the 2 bigger numbers it will leak. There are oversize pulleys available. |

I just, litterlly min. ago, machined a pulley for a sand seal. I zero'd it using the snout that goes into the case, then used the front of a crankshaft cut just after #4 bearing and in the pulley then used the bearing surface to zero the pulley, I found the spiral snout section was not true to the crank by almost .020", this was also considered a "quality" pulley. _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

Thanks for responses. I've purchased new pulleys. Also,,,,the grooves in the pulley's neck ARE working properly as stated! The oil ONLY leaks when I shut the motor off! A teaspoon in seconds and that's it. New ideas? thanks again |

I would double-check the 7 quarts.
I have an oil cooler and 1 1/2 quart thin sump. I don't think I can put in more than 5 quarts. I was surprised how little my Setrab oil cooler holds. Maybe you can check the website for your cooler to confirm how much to allow for it. |

Thanks for response and info. I drained 1 quart of oil. Now oil level is midway between lines on dipstick. Now when I turn off motor only 1/2 teaspoon leaks out with less pressure. next step I want to try original crank pulley. |
