| Have built 1600 dual port engine w/ counter ballanced crank, lightened fly wheel, big valve heads, header exhaust system, and re-enforced case. I have a progressive carb off a '72 bus and was wondering if it would function ok on this engine. Didn't know if jetting problems would crop up or every thing would work fine. Thanks. |

The issue isn't the carb, it's the manifold that makes it suck. You won't gain anything putting a progressive on a 1600 and most likely it'll suffer from poorer performance and mileage than the PICT3. Then there's the space and linkage issues and figuring out an air cleaner, not for me thanks. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

BusDaddy - I think the general rule being followed here is that the OP is in the process of building what would be known as a sandrail motor. Example - a lightened flywheel is good for a light sandrail that runs at the top of its RPM with little torque other than when the paddles bite. Lightening the flywheel allows the motor to rev faster but also can move the torsional center of a crankshaft from a main journal to a rod journal transition which is nasty when torque is needed instead high RPM torqueless HP - like what a sandrail generates charging up a sand dune at 7000 RPM spinning the tires. Progressive carbs were used quite a bit in sandrails, and Baja bugs that ran out in the 105F - 115F heat all day where there is no carb icing. One thing that would concern me is if this is being used in a bus it is not the best motor for it. Fortunately most dual port flywheels are forged so that risk is not there like a T4 that has cast flywheels - other than aftermarket or the rare 914 forged one. _________________

| Aircooled.net has an improved manifold that will get more heat to the bottom of the carb and get it there much faster after a cold start. IMO if you disable the power valve on these carbs then tuning them becomes much easier, note that most carbs used on these engines do not use vacuum operated power valves. |
