Does anyone have any good pics or dimensions of bracket that bolts to Decklid? I resently purchased a used carrier for a excellent price ,but he didn't have this bracket. Any help would be greatly appreciated, please send to: [email protected]

I just installed the Thing Shop tire carrier last Summer. I had a friend who is a welder help me. Good thing I asked him for help because some modification was needed. We also fabricated some extra support. My spare is REALLY heavy.

I'll take some detailed pics and post them - hopefully today.

You definitely need extra support. I have one on the rear of the 74 I just bought and the metal is cracked on the body at both brackets and will have to be welded and repaired on mine.

I have one that hasn't been installed yet.

Would be willing to lend it.

I've only had it on for less than 6 months, but haven't had any problems. At a show this Summer I saw one Thing with a lot of damage done due to the carrier. As I said, that spare is REALLY heavy. The Thing Shop tire carrier isn't that well designed - compared to Jeep tire carriers - and definitely needs added support behind the deck lid.

I hope this helps.

Good point on the quality..

I've seen about 3 of them up close.. many of the welds are shabby (on most)

I have a hunch many are meant to be show and not supportive.

Thanks for the great pix.

You need to remove some load from the decklid or cracks will appear...

Here is what I've found when I remove mine...

Does anyone out there have the spare on the front or the hood? Thing Shop says their hood mount should only be used for off-road; anyone know why? I like the look, but you'd probably need another hood prop to hold the weight if you were going to use the newly found space in the trunk.

Probably because of this.

It's like that in most states.

On a customers car, At 6' 2" I can see over his spare just fine. My 5' 5" wife about can't. Also your right, forget about opening the hood with the tire on there. Oh and you can't fold down the windshield.

This carrier was a unique one that surfaced at the German Motor works show 2005 and got posted in the Gallery.

It attaches to the bumper and one spot on the deck lid:

I like how the license plate holder is in the spare,
and the angle of the tire seems to match the decklid angle.
Nice work, and I assume it must be a custom one-off.
Looks like the car previously had the TS tire carrier, btw.
I know, it's not an ideal setup for engine access,
but maybe the owner puts a cushion on there and sits native-american style. Rolling Eyes

More info on mounting a tire on the hood can be found here...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=259676

As far as the Thing Shop rear tire carrier goes, I would also like to mention that you really need to factor in the weight of the tire on the carrier BEFORE you mount and secure the decklid bracket. The supplied paper template from the Thing Shop isn't 100% accurate so mounting the swing arm before you mount the decklid bracket is the best way to go. The tire weighs a lot and really effects how the swing arm latches to the decklid.

Also, (if you don't live in Arizona or southern California) you'll want to consider replacing the hardware that the Thing Shop supplies with stainless steel nuts and bolts. The supplied hardware developed surface rust mere weeks after I installed it (you can see the surface rust in the above photos - note that my Thing is kept in a garage year round). I have since replaced everything with stainless steel and it looks great.

cut a backing plate outta steel and that will reinforce that and spread the load over a wider area for the underside.

Ha! Yeah, I spotted these pics a while back and thought the same thing about accessing the engine. Having to work around the tire and carrier would be a real hassle. However, it seems like it offers better structural support than the Thing Shop's. Like I said before, it isn't well designed to support such a heavy load.

The other issue with the tire carriers, is that unless you are very careful how you close them, it is very easy to dent the deck lid. Most cars I have seen with carriers have some kind of dent on that receiving end. I am not seeing that on the pictures of the cars shown here. I have had a factory one sitting in my garage forever but have always been afraid damaging the car. I would love the extra space up front though.

...now i should get a spare that holds air, yes?!
