Universal case will work for both. A little more information about what you have and what you want to do would help.
Oil filler Location is one obvious difference.
<edit> If it's for an automatic you will have to carve out a place to get at the torque converter bolts. _________________

72 t3 squareback.
I purchased a used parts lot on ebay containing the parts to build a 1915cc
the case is a as41 flycut for 94mm, the heads are stock cut for 94mm(I will port these to make them flow better).I will have them rebuilt with ss valves.
Stock crank and rods from what looks like a 1600 autostick, new mahle cam, lifters. scat seals, push rods, hd springs. Im going to use a new set of weber icts from my 1600 for now but am going to change to megasquirt FI next year.
Its not optimal but a good start and should have lots of torque! _________________ 1972 Squareback

If the crank is from a 1600 Type 3 automatic, there's no difference, AFAIK.
If it's from a Type 1 autostick, I'm not sure...
I didn't know Mahle made cams. Do they still?
Isn't an AS-41 case a universal case? If so, you just have to plug the dipstick tube for a Type 3 application. Everything else should work for a Type 3 motor. (oil filler tube, rear hanger bosses, etc.) _________________ Phillip Bradfield

AS-41 just stands for the alloy the case is made from. There were different AS41's for T-1 and T-3. Then there was the Universal AS41, which would work for both. A universal AS41, would have both the T-3 dip stick mount, and the hole for the T-1 oil pressure switch. You just plug the one you dont use.
And there was no difference in the crank and rods for a automatic, autostick, or a manual trans. Only difference for the autostick engine was the oil pump. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
