Any ideas on what to replace the old yellow insulation in the upper section of the engine compartment

A commercial roofing company or supply will have some roll type rubber stuff about 3/8-1/2 inch thick... It's what they use for a "modified bittemun" roofing technique( basicsally torch down rubber and tar and covered with pea gravel...)

Anyway if you can get some of that it is easy to work with and has great sound deadining qualities..... Make good pieces for any VW engine compartment as well...better than most of the so called replacment panels sold and looks like it was meant to be....
