Only thing about too big or an old 'hand me down" is that it may well tax the charging system, especially the 30 amp gen and reg set up. If you still have the 38 amp bus unit, it can handle a bit more.... but gens, especially and older or rebuilt mahy not like putting out alot of amps...
More modern cars have more electrial stuff so need more amps ect. and their alternators put out around a min of 60 amps and most are now 80-100+
If you have a Bosch Al82 putting out 55
you'll probably be ok...
Cheaper in the long run to buy a suitable
new battery. all IMHO of course... |

| inqury: What is a "Bosch Al82 putting out 55" mean to us simple folks out here and the other ones reading this but were too shy to ask? Only thing I have Bosch is a 009 distributor. I also seem to remember some shop teacher telling stories of melting the wiring harness when you put too much power through it, which makes sense too me. Do buses have pretty hearty wiring or should I call Tim the Toolman Taylor? |

| P.P.S. What what if I don't have a Bosch Al82, which I assume is and alternator, and I KNOW this vehicle has a generator, what would a reasonably sane and explosion fearing person do? |

Yes, sorry about being a bit non descript, the AL-82 (X rebuilt, N- new) is an alternator. Don't worry as long as your wiring hasn't been melted down before or re wired by some fool with a roll of red and a roll of yellow # 16 your ok
Yes a VOM will give you info at the battery, and the out put of the gen and reg if you touch the leads correctly, it's a little more complicated to get amp output but if your kicking out 12.75-13.25V thats a good sign.... on the gen/or alt touch the red to the big post and the black to the body of the gen/alt and you get what it is putting out, you may have to have it idled up a bit to "cut in speed"
I was basically suggesting to only use the 'other car battery ' as a temporary fix and not a long term thing.... get the right one when you can... |
